Welcoming new faculty

  • Each fall we host a New Faculty Orientation for all new academics. This two-day event provides an overview of UM including strategic priorities, teaching, research and student supports. We also offer monthly workshops to support a successful transition to UM and opportunities for new faculty to network and socialize.

Attend our 2023 orientation: Monday, Aug. 28 and Tuesday, Aug. 29.

For an introduction to teaching and learning, research and scholarly work, and tenure and promotion at UM, consult our Faculty eResource Guide (PDF) which is located on the UM Intranet. Log in to the UM Intranet using your UMNetID and find the helpful resource on the "Employee onboarding" site under "Employee resources".

Scholarship of Teaching and Learning Support Fund

The Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SOTL) Support Fund provides opportunities for professors, instructors, and librarians to meaningfully engage in projects that increase knowledge in pedagogy and learning.

Learn more about the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning Support Fund

The SOTL Support Fund invites applications for teaching and learning projects in four funding streams:

Teaching and Learning Seed Project

This program is available to all full-time tenure track/tenured faculty and probationary/continuing instructors and librarians. It offers seed funding for projects that examine factors that influence student learning, explore new pedagogical approaches, and advance the scholarship of teaching and learning. Funds up to a maximum of $6000 per project are available and approximately ten (10) projects will be funded.

Teaching Scholar

This program is available to all full-time tenure track/tenured faculty and probationary/continuing instructors and librarians. Priority may be given to those individuals who have completed the Teaching and Learning Certificate Program. Successful applicants will dedicate 40% of their time over one term to develop and execute a personal teaching and learning project or participate in an existing Center for the Advancement of Teaching and Learning (CATL) project. This work will support the development of the individual’s teaching portfolio and help to prepare for the promotion and tenure process. The program will provide funds for course release instructor(s) during the project semester. Equivalent arrangements that facilitate the project (e.g., 20% release time per semester for two semesters) may be considered. Up to three (3) projects will be funded.

Teaching and Learning Major Project

This program is available to all full-time tenure track/tenured faculty and probationary/continuing instructors and librarians. It offers funds to support initiatives that influence student learning which are interdisciplinary and may span across faculties, colleges, or schools. Projects that have previously received teaching and learning seed funding will be prioritized. Funds up to a maximum of $25,000 per project are available with matching/in-kind contributions from the unit(s). Up to three (3) projects will be funded.

Teaching Fellowship

This program will support one (1) tenured faculty member. The successful applicant will dedicate 40-50% of their contract time over a two-year period to conducting a major SoTL project and serving as a faculty teaching and learning expert at the Centre for the Advancement of Teaching and Learning. The program will provide funds for a course release instructor(s) as well as project funding up to $25,000, a 0.3 FTE research associate, and office space in the Centre over the duration of the fellowship. Units will provide matching funds.

UM Student Rating of Instruction (UM SRI)

A key part of our commitment to students and teaching excellence is the ongoing evaluation of courses by students.

The UM SRI allows the opportunity for students to provide summative feedback for instructors on identified teaching priorities and gives instructors an opportunity to collect additional feedback for their own professional development.
