Guidelines
Purpose
BeWell Grants have been established to fund new or ongoing initiatives, projects, activities, and events that
- foster positive student mental health and well-being, and
- contribute toward a supportive, responsive and inclusive learning environment for students.
Priority will be given to student-led initiatives and projects that strengthen student mental health and well-being and contribute to a more connected, inclusive and supportive university community, with particular emphasis on initiatives that:
- strengthen student engagement, connection and belonging;
- advance diversity, equity, inclusion and anti-racism; and
- foster meaningful collaboration among University of Manitoba units and departments and/or community organizations.
BeWell grant proposals should clearly address one or more of the goals below, in alignment with the UM and Student Affairs’ Strategic Plans and priorities:
Facilitate belonging
Foster belonging, connection, and community among students. Projects create opportunities for students (as individuals and groups) to connect with other members of the UM community through shared experiences, cultural exchanges, peer engagement, social activities, or community-building events.
Weave connections
Build meaningful collaborations that strengthen impact and shared learning. Projects should encourage partnerships between students and staff, faculty, departments, faculties, student organizations, and/or community organizations. Successful initiatives will leverage diverse perspectives, expertise, and resources to foster stronger connections for students within and beyond the University community.
Increase well-being literacy
Increase student awareness, understanding, and skills related to mental health, well-being, resilience, and self-care. Projects will encourage learning and awareness-building through diverse approaches that help build knowledge, reduce stigma, and foster a shared understanding of well-being across the UM community.
Enhance resource awareness and navigation
Improve student awareness, access, and connection to resources, services, opportunities, and networks of care. Projects may better help students discover and navigate supports available on campus or in the broader community. Initiatives will reduce barriers, increase awareness of available resources, and strengthen pathways to the supports needed for students to thrive.
Lead change
Support initiatives that empower students, staff, and faculty to act on issues that affect student well-being, belonging, and inclusion. Projects may introduce new approaches, respond to emerging needs, or inspire positive change within a unit, community, or campus-wide setting. Projects will demonstrate initiative, creativity, and a commitment to strengthening the UM community and the student experience
Eligibility
All members of the University of Manitoba are eligible to apply for a BeWell Grant for support (e.g., students, staff, instructors, faculty, etc.). Where a student is the principal applicant, a staff or faculty sponsor is required for administrative and consultative purposes.
If you are a student wanting to apply but need support in identifying an appropriate sponsor, please email bewellgrants@umanitoba.ca for assistance.
Funding and eligible expenses
BeWell Grants will be a maximum of $1,500 each and must be fully spent by March 31, 2027 (for Winter 2027 projects) or by March 31, 2028 (for 2027-2028 academic year projects). Any questions or concerns about spending the funding by this date should be communicated with the BeWell committee as soon as possible.
Funds will be available for programming or operating expenses related to the proposal (including supplies in some cases) but cannot be used for capital expenditures (renovations or additions to the physical environment) related to the proposal. Additionally, funds may be available for student staff salaries but will not be approved for personnel costs related to full-time and continuing positions.
First round of submissions
- For use within the 2027 Winter term - submission deadline of November 16, 2026.
Second round of submissions

How to apply
Complete the application form by the submission deadline. Any questions regarding your application can be directed to the BeWell Grant Committee at bewellgrants@umanitoba.ca.
Proposals submitted after the deadline will not be considered.
What makes a strong application
- Applications must include an introductory section with references to the Reimagining the Student Experience at UM: The Student Affairs Strategic Plan (2025-2030) and other university reports (where applicable), along with a discussion of your rationale as to why this project will be relevant to the UM student population.
- Projects that reflect innovative approaches to the promotion and enhancement of student well-being, engagement and belonging are favoured.
- Student involvement and cross-unit collaboration is strongly encouraged.
- Outcomes of the project must be clearly articulated with a description of how the project will be evaluated.
- Applications should be written so that someone who is not in your discipline understands the project details.
- Any community involvement should be highlighted.
- The budget must be justified.
- Funds requested for travel, faculty release time, and research projects will not be considered.
Evaluation process
Proposals will be vetted and ranked by a committee, chaired by Arlana Vadnais, Associate Director, Wellness & Prevention and include representatives from Student Affairs and key campus partners. View the full committee membership.
The proposals recommended for funding will significantly contribute to the enhancement and promotion of student well-being, engagement and belonging at the University of Manitoba through their alignment with one or more of the goals listed in the Purpose section above.
Evaluation criteria
To increase the likelihood of approval, please ensure your proposal includes the following elements:
- Clear benefits: Prioritizes the enhancement and promotion of student well-being, engagement and belonging in a way that benefits a significant number of students directly (e.g., enhancement of programs, services, and resources) and/or indirectly (e.g., anti-stigma initiatives).
- Clear rationale, objectives and methodology: Provides clear rationale and objectives consistent with the BeWell goals, as stated on page one of this document. It clearly explains methodology.
- Defined outcomes: Expected outcomes are well defined.
- Continuing benefits: Explains how the project benefits will continue beyond the grant period (including an indication of the source of future ongoing funding should such be required).
- Evaluation process: Outlines an evaluation process, which will be used to ascertain how well objectives have been met and the overall impact of the project.
- Evidence of student involvement: Student engagement in preparing, reviewing and/or implementing the proposal is explained.
- Paid student staff: Student positions hired to implement a BeWell Grant must comply with applicable University employment policies and collective agreements. Applicants must consult their unit’s Human Resources Consultant before hiring to confirm the appropriate employment category and ensure that the proposed duties do not displace bargaining-unit employees, reduce their regular hours of work, or otherwise conflict with collective agreement requirements.
- Budget: Budget is appropriate and justified, with an explanation of associated costs.
- Enhancements to Existing Initiatives: For proposals involving enhancement to work already underway, the proposal must contain detailed progress to date.
Additional Considerations
- Potential for sustainable benefit to students.
- Potential for sustainable enhancement and promotion of student well-being, engagement and belonging at the University of Manitoba.
- Integration of the proposed project with other current or planned initiatives in the Department, Faculty, or broader learning community.
- Additional sources of funding.
- Consideration of related initiatives at the University of Manitoba or at other institutions.
- Evidence of collaboration between UM units, community participation and/or consultation process, where appropriate.
- Opportunity for students to participate in learner-centered environments in a variety of roles (e.g., mentors, peer support, facilitators, research assistants).
Funding and Allocation Considerations
- Proposals are invited for projects to a maximum of $1500.
- Faculties/Schools may rank proposals if they wish. The committee will take the rankings into account as one factor in determining allocations.
- Wherever possible, proposals should take advantage of existing University of Manitoba resources, such as software licenses. Where an applicant wishes to make a case for developing new or additional resources not already available, the proposal should provide evidence that the relevant departments (e.g., IST or the Centre for the Advancement of Teaching and Learning) have been consulted about feasibility and usefulness of the new resource.
- When matching or additional sources of funding are available, the budget should show specifically what the matching funds cover.
- BeWell Grants are not intended for activities or projects that would normally be funded by operating or capital budgets or which could be adequately supported through other funding sources such as the professional development funds for staff and faculty.
- If a project budget includes student salary costs, vacation pay of 6% must be factored into the salary expense.
- BeWell Grant funding may not be used for Professional Development activities unless the committee has deemed that the project’s success depends on the fund being used for this specific purpose (e.g., conference attendance by participating faculty and students) and has specifically approved this part of the budget request.
Conditions of funding
- Successful applicants are required to comply with the BeWell reporting requirements outlined in the congratulatory letter and posted on the website. Specifically: Quarterly progress updates for projects longer than 6 months in duration will be required, and all projects require a final report to be submitted within one month following the project completion date as indicated in the proposal. Please see the report templates; all sections of the template must be completed.
- Significant spending adjustments to budget categories must have prior approval from the BeWell Grants Committee.
- Transfers of funds to or from a BeWell Grant project to other budget accounts are not permitted.
- Any unused funds remaining in BeWell Grant accounts at the time of account closure will be returned to the BeWell Grant fund.
- Faculties and Schools must submit all applications they receive to the committee at bewellgrants@umanitoba.ca.
- Any purchases or procurement of services must be made in accordance with the relevant University of Manitoba policies.
- Projects may be featured at several points throughout the process (i.e., announcing successful proposals, featuring highlights from implemented projects via multiple avenues, included in final reports).
- Project directors are encouraged to submit photos that may be used for promotion along with final reports.
