Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation Residency

Physiatrists improve the quality of life for a diverse patient population suffering from neurologic, musculoskeletal and cardiorespiratory impairments. Specialists in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, physiatrists apply their expertise and skill in interventional pain clinic practices, sports medicine, independent medical examinations and in their work with children and adults with disabilities.

A five-year Royal College of Canada Specialty, the University of Manitoba’s Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation Specialty Education program typically offers two resident positions per year. Staffed by eight geographic full-time and two part-time community physiatrists, our program has a complement of nine current residents.

Learn a wide variety of interventional treatments

Explore interventional treatment techniques for musculoskeletal diseases, including ultrasound-guided chemodenervation and musculoskeletal injections. In the pain clinic, you’ll be exposed to cross-appointed faculty physiatrists performing interventional spinal procedures.

Clinical EMG and Neuromuscular Diseases training

A focus on Clinical EMG and Neuromuscular Diseases training prepares you for EMG certification by the Canadian Society of Clinical Neurophysiologists (CSCN) and the American Board of Electrodiagnostic Medicine (ABEM) upon program completion.

Diverse electives and rotations

Participate in up to six months of out-of-province electives, either interprovincially or internationally. You’ll also experience inpatient physiatry rotations with a patient load of up to 15 and outpatient clinics.

Weekly academic rounds

Take part in weekly academic rounds, including basic sciences, general rehabilitation topics and examination skills alongside staff who are present from start to finish and serve as a resource.
