Overview:

As part of the 25 kV Hydro Upgrade Project, Manitoba Hydro will be pulling electrical cables at various locations on the University of Manitoba campus over the next three months.

This work will require temporary partial road closures. Specific dates, times, affected roads and any impacts to nearby buildings are still being confirmed.

Once the schedule has been finalized, a follow-up notice will be issued with detailed information about:

• Affected roads and buildings
• Closure dates and times
• Access restrictions or alternate routes

Please watch for further updates and allow additional travel time when moving through affected areas.

Category: Smudging and Pipe Ceremony notification from 

Overview:

A smudging ceremony is an Indigenous tradition which involves the burning of plant medicines including sweetgrass, sage and/or cedar. This may produce a distinct aroma, but the smoke associated with it is minimal and lasts a very short time. 

Under the Province of Manitoba’s “The Non-Smokers Health Protection Act,” smudging is permitted. The University of Manitoba recognizes that smudging is a part of the Indigenous traditional way of life and is therefore permitted on campus. Overview:

• Please be advised that the emergency generator will be load tested and inspected on Thursday, Oct 22, 2026 – 7:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. to meet Manitoba Code requirements.  

Public action:

• Building occupants will not be affected unless there is a real power outage during the load test portion of the inspection.  
• If this occurs and you do not have sufficient natural light for egress, please do not exit the building until the emergency lighting system is restored.

    • Left turns are not permitted from the westbound Abinojii Mikanah ramp onto southbound Pembina Highway.

Note:

• Northbound and southbound travel along Pembina Highway will not be affected by these closures.

Overview: 

• Please be advised that the City of Winnipeg will commence road construction on Kings Drive starting on or around Monday, June 8. 

• Work includes street and sidewalk renewal, including new pathway construction at the entrance to the University of Manitoba. 

• During construction, Kings Drive will be converted to a one-way street with traffic permitted to travel in one direction only, depending on the construction Stage. 

• There will be no on-street parking, and access to private approaches will be limited at times. 

• Transit will be rerouted as necessary. 

• Sidewalks may be closed on one side of the street at a time.

Overview:

• Please be advised that the sidewalk on the east side of St John’s College Residence will remain closed for the duration of the project to allow for construction activity (see map).
• Access to the Wallace Building and Parking Lots Q/K is available through the greenspace between St. John’s College and St. Paul’s College or via the Wallace tunnel, which can be accessed indoors through the Allen Building and Parker Building.
• Access to St John’s College and St. John’s College Residence will not be affected.

Action for area travellers:

• Please plan accordingly and allow additional time for the detour.
• Barricades and safety signage will be clearly posted to safely direct cyclists and pedestrians as required.

Overview: 

• Construction of the Prairie Biologics Accelerator Building has started in Parking Lot A. To facilitate construction, remaining sections of Parking Lot A and a portion of Sifton Rd. will be closed starting on or after Monday, January 26 (see map) and continuing for the duration of the project (approx. 2+ years).
• Building access and access to loading docks will be maintained to all surrounding buildings. Emergency vehicle access will be maintained throughout construction.
• Accessible parking will be available within the surrounding area. Pedestrian access will be maintained with some detours in place.
• Please plan accordingly. Barricades and safety signage will be clearly posted to safely direct vehicles, cyclists and pedestrians as required.
• Caution should be taken at all times during construction. Flag people will be on site to help direct traffic as needed. Your patience and cooperation to ensure everyone’s safety is appreciated.

Overview: 

• Please be advised that Parking Lot ACE will be fully closed from September 2, 2025, to September 2027.
• The Contractor Parking lot will be partially closed for the same period.

We anticipate reopening the  Joyce Fromson Pool in early 2027. While timelines remain subject to the completion of the project, pool-related programming will not be offered in fall 2026.

Overview:

• On Saturday, Oct. 17/26, from 7 a.m. to 10:30 a.m., we will be off to some areas in the building. 
• Levels 100 & 200 of the building will remain open to the public, but access to Level 300 and above will be closed. 
• Barricades and signage will be erected by the contractor while the work is being performed.

Service Disruption – St Paul’s College – Building Access (South) and Emergency Exits

• Please be advised that due to construction on the new elevator at St Paul’s College, building access from the South is being diverted to the doors on the East side of the building. 

• The doors into the stairwell on the South side of the building will be closed during construction and are available for emergency exit only.

• All other building doors will remain open. 

• Emergency exits within the building will be relocated as required during construction.

• Please be aware of signage in the building directing you to the nearest emergency exit.

• Please be advised that, as part of the gym flooring replacement in the Investor’s Group Athletic Centre (IGAC), contractors will be finishing the floor on Level 100 from 8:00 a.m. on Monday, August 24, until 4 p.m. on Friday, September 4.

• The flooring product being applied emits a strong odour during application and curing. Because the buildings are connected, the odour may extend beyond the gym and into other areas or buildings. 

• Contractors will take all reasonable measures to minimize the impact, including using hoarding and additional ventilation.

• Please note that the IGAC building will remain open throughout this period.

The adjacent area on the east side will also be excavated as required to connect the new lines to existing concrete pipes outside the building.

• Overview: The washrooms in rooms 113 and 114 of the Architecture 2 building are temporarily closed due to a breach in the crawl space drain line.
• The piping in the crawl space is being replaced by the contractor.
• We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause and assure you that we are working diligently to resolve the situation as quickly as possible.
• We anticipate that substantial completion for this project will be achieved by the end of Summer 2026. Level 100 washrooms should be operational by early Fall 2026.
