Roads and sidewalks/pathways

  • Due to seasonal weather conditions please take additional care when travelling on campus. Be cautious of current roadway and walkway conditions and adapt travel plans accordingly. Operations and Maintenance workers are actively removing snow, shovelings building entrances and sanding travel routes.  Please take notice of your surroundings when snow removal is taking place.

Road closures

University Crescent / Pembina Hwy and Abinojii Mikanah - City of Winnipeg Construction

  • Overview: Work on University Crescent and Pembina Highway continues into the fall. Road renewal commenced in late May and will last until October 2025. Construction along University Cres. includes utility upgrades, road renewal, new sidewalk, lighting and new traffic signals at Markham Road and Sifton Road. Traffic on University Crescent will be reduced to one lane in either direction from Thatcher Drive to Dysart Road. Construction on the Pembina Hwy and Abinojii Mikanah overpass will span the 2025 and 2026 construction seasons and will include lane closures and detours. Delays may be experienced during peak times. In order to minimize delays, please consider accessing and departing the UM Fort Garry campus via Chancellor Matheson Rd. Please plan accordingly. Barricades and safety signage will be clearly posted to safely direct vehicles, cyclists and pedestrians as required. Transit service will be maintained with temporary bus stop relocations when required. Transit reroutes may be required during special events. Caution should be taken at all times. Flag people will be on site to help direct traffic as needed. Your patience and cooperation to ensure everyone’s safety is appreciated.

Parking Lot A at Sifton Rd.

  • Overview: Construction of the Prairie Biologics Accelerator Building has started in Parking Lot A. To facilitate construction, remaining sections of Parking Lot A and a portion of Sifton Rd. will be closed starting on or after Monday, January 26 (see map) and continuing for the duration of the project (approx. 2+ years). Building access and access to loading docks will be maintained to all surrounding buildings. Emergency vehicle access will be maintained throughout construction. Accessible parking will be available within the surrounding area. Pedestrian access will be maintained with some detours in place.

Service Disruption – Service Road 1S

  • Overview: Please be advised that Service Road 1S will be closed beside the Central Energy Plant to allow for the presence of a crane, Thursday February 5 (please see attached). No through traffic is allowed on Service Rd 1S, but access to Parking Lot D/S will be maintained.  Flaggers will be on site to assist, and  signage and barricades will be in place.

Architecture 2

  • Overview: Washrooms located at rooms 113 and 114 in the Architecture 2 building are temporarily closed due to a breach in the drain line in the crawl space.
    Our plumbing shop is currently working on formulating a repair plan to address the issue promptly. We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause and assure you that we are working diligently to resolve the situation as quickly as possible.
    In the meantime, we will be posting signs to help direct you to the nearest available bathroom locations within the building. Your understanding and cooperation during this time are greatly appreciated.

Bannatyne New Building 805 McDermot Avenue (former T-Block Building)

There will be four accessible parking spaces maintained on the east side of Med Rehab, see attached plan highlighted in teal.

Investors Group Athletic Centre (IGAC) – Facility disruption notification

Please be advised that the Investors Group Athletic Centre (IGAC) will undergo a planned, extensive closure this summer to complete facility upgrades.

  • Closure period: June to September 2026
  • Work includes: Complete court flooring replacement. 

This timeline has been planned to balance impacts on facility users. 

All spring programs and activities currently scheduled to take place within the Investors Group Athletic Centre, including the Fort Garry campus Spring Convocation ceremonies, are uninterrupted and will proceed as planned. Junior Bisons spring tournaments will also run as planned. 

This closure window will regrettably primarily affect summer camp programming operated in the space. The Mini U team is developing alternative strategies to ensure our most popular program will run in alternative spaces. Staff and affected participants will be directly communicated with regarding specific impacts and plans. 

This broader alert serves to notify the community of the facility timeline.

Units such as Bison Sports, Mini U and Junior Bisons will communicate specific operational updates, alternative locations and program plans directly to their respective participants, coaches and staff.

Joyce Fromson Pool, Frank Kennedy Centre

The Joyce Fromson Pool is currently closed and will remain closed until further notice. 

UM remains committed to offering high-quality swim programming and will continue to update the community as more information becomes available about reopening the Joyce Fromson Pool.

Machray Hall

Medical Services Building - UPDATE

  • Overview: The Medical Services Building Structural Upgrades to the Roof Assembly Project is set to resume on Monday, June 9, 2025, with an anticipated/forecasted duration of 3 months (completion by ~mid-September).
  • Our contractor (Winnipeg Building & Decorating) will be performing the work from the rooftop access; however, periodic construction noise (masonry chipping, sawing & hammering) is expected on level 200 over the course of this work.   The 1st phase of roof repairs will occur over the L200 Washrooms, which will allow for an initial evaluation of the noise levels encountered/migrating into L200 occupied areas.  Efforts to limit excessively disruptive/noisy activities to the early morning periods (7-8:30am) will be undertaken wherever the construction sequence of activities allows.   Please be aware that construction sounds will still be apparent sporadically throughout the day as various construction tasks are undertaken (lumber movement, sawing, hammering) on the roof.

Architecture 2

  • Overview: Mechanical Contractor will be proceeding with the replacement of sanitary sewer piping and storm sewer piping in the crawlspace of Architecture II building starting Monday, July 14, 2025. Access to the work area will be provided by exposing portion of the existing foundation along recessed courtyard at the north side of the building (Excavation Area 1). Adjacent area at the east side will be also excavated as required to connect the new lines to existing concrete pipes outside the building.

Agriculture and Plant Science

Parking lot A Generator

  • Overview: We are in the final repair stages of having the North generator put back online. The temporary generator in parking lot A (see map for location) currently cannot be removed until a full load test to the existing one has been completed. 
    On Monday April 13th, a semi and trailer will be bringing a load bank and transformer to perform this task. Once the load test has been completed, we will be arranging to remove all the trailers from parking lot A.

Allen Building Loading Dock

  • Overview: Allen building loading dock will remain open during construction on the Prairie Biologics Accelerator Building. There will be a few days of trenching work that will occur in front of the Allen loading dock. A disruption notice will be issued a week before the scheduled date of this work.
    There will be a barricade with a sign indicating “loading dock access only” that will need to be moved to access the dock during the disruption. The reason for the barricade is to prevent other vehicles from driving through and getting trapped at a dead end . Thank you for your understanding.
