Fort Garry Campus Domestic Water Systems

Limit water consumption for less used Fort Garry campus buildings

The University of Manitoba Fort Garry Campus buildings have been primarily closed for the past few weeks and months. With a prolonged closure, some under utilized water systems could result in discoloured, foul smelling, stagnant water due to a lack of water flow and the water sitting in the galvanized pipes.

It is highly recommended that any buildings that have not been used routinely over the past few months make limited use of the water for consumption. As a precautionary measure, many of the water dispensers in low use buildings were disabled or signed “Out of Service” to avoid inadvertent use.

Bannatyne Campus has remained flushed and in use for the majority of the shutdown, so is considered to be an acceptable quality and operational.

If building occupants experience discoloured or foul smelling water, they are recommended to take the following actions:

  • Avoid using the water at this time.
  • Bring water from home or purchase bottled water for consumption.
  • Do not use discolored water for any purposes that require clean water (e.g., preparing food and beverages, laundry).
  • Follow the City of Winnipeg guidelines for discoloured water https://winnipeg.ca/waterandwaste/water/discolouredfaq.stm.
  • Questions or concerns regarding this disruption can be directed to Customer Service Desk at 204-474-6281 or http://umanitoba.ca/campus/physical_plant/adminss/maintreq.html

During COVID-19 there is restricted access to U of M facilities. Please contact John Dodd at EHS to discuss any sensitive equipment that needs to be checked on and how we can do that in a safe manner with the fewest people coming onto campus.
