Road Closures

Dysart Road Condensate Leak

  • Timeframe (est.): Starting February 13, 2023 until early November 

  • Overview: Dysart Rd. is now open. Sidney Smith St. at Dysart Rd. will be closed until November. During the closure, access to Parking Lot Q is off Dysart Rd. see map for location.
    Construction activity is due to a condensate leak and ongoing steam/condensate replacement project. 
    Barricades and safety signage will be clearly posted to safely direct vehicles, cyclists and pedestrians as required. Caution should be taken at all times during construction. Your patience and cooperation to ensure everyone’s safety is appreciated.

Road Construction and Infrastructure Renewal

    Location: Various (Dysart Road, Curry Place, Dafoe Road, University Crescent, Freedman Crescent)

    Please be advised that campus wide road construction and infrastructure renewal work is expected to continue through the fall. Please refer to the attached map and information below:

    •    Zone 1: Dysart Road closed at Sidney Smith Street for a steam line replacement. Dysart Rd. to reopen mid-September with project completion anticipated in November. See previous story: UM Today | Dysart Road closure — update (umanitoba.ca)
    •    Zone 2: Curry Place south of the Education Building will be impacted by storm sewer repair starting late July. 
    •    UPDATE - Zone 3: Dafoe Road surface rehabilitation is now complete. Dafoe Road and adjacent Parking Lots are now open. Transit has resumed normal operations.
    •    Zone 4: University Crescent will be impacted by construction to address a condensate leak. One lane will be closed southbound University Cres. during construction.
    •    Campus-wide road, parking lot and walkway repairs in July/August.

    Flag people will be on site to help direct traffic as needed. Please plan accordingly. Barricades and safety signage will be clearly posted to safely direct vehicles, cyclists and pedestrians as required. Caution should be taken at all times during construction. Your patience and cooperation to ensure everyone’s safety is appreciated.

Parking lot between Physical Plant and Stores Buildings

  •  Location: The steam pipe repair project will occur under the parking lot between the physical plant and the stores building.

  • Timeframe: The construction work is scheduled to begin on September 11 and is expected to conclude on September 22

  • Category: Access Shutdown 

  • Overview: During the construction period, there will be no access to the parking stalls in the affected area. Additionally, the walkway from Freedman Cres. to Service Road will be inaccessible for safety reasons.
    Safety is our top priority. Please be aware of construction activities in the vicinity and adhere to any posted safety instructions. We kindly ask all personnel to exercise caution and follow detour signs to ensure everyone's well-being during this project.

    We apologize for any inconvenience this project may cause and appreciate your understanding and cooperation during this necessary maintenance work. Your safety and the efficiency of our facilities are of utmost importance to us.

Building and construction notices

Bannatyne Campus

  • Category: Reverse Osmosis Water Supply

  • Overview: Please be advised the reverse osmosis water system has been contaminated by the introduction of municipal water and will have to be completely drained and refilled to return the water to an acceptable level of dissolved solids and electrical continuity. All RO faucets, sterilizers, sanitizers or lab equipment using RO water will be affected. Please turn off all equipment using RO water prior to tomorrow shutdown on Wednesday 06/28/2023 at 9:00 a.m.  

    RO water suppling the aquatic life on level 500 Chown Building will not be shut off until a secondary source has been established to ensure there is no loss of aquatic life.
    For those requiring RO water in small amounts please purchase from a drinking water supplier such as Culligan Water, please confirm the water has been processed by reverse osmosis as some suppliers use different filtration methods.

Duff Roblin

  • Overview: Duff Roblin Building has experienced a significant leak on the chilled water line in the mechanical room. Water has leaked down to various areas of the building. Physical plant is working on stopping the leak, cleaning up the water and checking for any damage caused from the leak. Updates will be provided as they are available. Elevator #1 has been shut down to assess damage from this leak.

Wallace

  • Category: Roof Work – possible odours due to roof work 

  • Overview: Wallace Building – Nov 2-Dec 1 – Roofing work will continue on the lower roof of Wallace.  During this work, you may notice odors in the building related to the sealant used on the roof. These odors do not pose a health risk. If you detect a strong burning odor, please contact Anish Gaur (Project Manager) immediately to investigate and confirm it is not from an actual fire.  If you observe visible smoke execute the building evacuation procedure and pull the fire alarm on your way out.

Fort Garry Campus (except for Richardson Building)

Reverse Osmosis water will not be available at this time. Users are asked to store water in advance if required. Domestic hot and cold water will not be affected.

Chown

  • Overview: The fire sprinkler system coverage on basement Level 000, specifically Rm. A006B will be offline during the indicated time, Monday, 12/11/23 to Tuesday, 12/12/23 between the hours of 7:30 am. – 3:00 pm. This work is part of the ongoing Chown Fish Facility Upgrade. During the period when the fire sprinkler is out of service for the entirety of basement Level 000, fire watch will be provided by the Contractor between the hours of 7:30 am. – 3:00 pm. of the shutdown period. If you notice any fire or smoke, please exit the building immediately and activate a nearest manual fire alarm pull station on your way out.

Fire Alarm Testing Bannatyne

  • Overview: Please be advised that Physical Plant will be doing Fire Alarm Testing Tuesday, 12/19/2023- 07:00 a.m. - 08:00 a.m. 
    During the fire alarm test, fire bells/horns will be pulsed for 5 seconds repetitively. It is important to note that if a true fire alarm happens to coincide with fire alarm testing, fire bells/horns will stop pulsing and will ring continuously, thereby indicating that you must exit the building and follow established evacuation procedures. Once again, pulsating fire alarm bells/horns indicate legislated, fire alarm testing by Physical Plant and do not require evacuation.

    Alarms will not ring in Animal facilities.
