Understanding Equity, Diversity, Inclusion, and Accessibility in Practice (EDIA 0108)

Each learner enters conversations around topics in equity, diversity, inclusion, and accessibility with different knowledge, skills, and lived experiences, reflecting their own unique position within intersecting systems of power and oppression. This course will allow all participants to critically reflect on their strengths and areas for further growth, and develop an action plan to contribute towards a more equitable, diverse, inclusive, and accessible workplace environment. This course is suitable for everyone, regardless of where they are currently in their own personal journey.

  • A deeper experience

    UM is one of many organizations doing the important work of providing education and training on equity, diversity, inclusion and accessibility. Our approach offers a much deeper experience than a short workshop. This 18-hour course informs and inspires change. Past participants of our UM training consistently report an increase in their personal self-awareness and ability to act appropriately in matters related to equity, diversity, inclusion and accessibility.

     

  • Apply this learning to your workplace

    Apply what you learn in this course to your workplace so everyone can thrive. Challenge unfair systems and practices to identify and remove barriers for all. With a stronger understanding of key terminology and concepts, important skills in critical self-reflection and empathy for different perspectives that you gain from this course, you will better understand your position in the world and the issues we face so you are prepared to make a difference.

Learning outcomes

Upon completion of this course, you should be able to:

  • critically assess your own knowledge, skills, and lived experiences as related to equity, diversity, inclusion, and accessibility, given your social location and positionality within intersecting systems of power and oppression
  • identify strengths and areas for further learning in content areas relating to equity, diversity, inclusion, and accessibility
  • better appreciate, understand, and empathize with perspectives and experiences different from your own and articulate where your and others’ perspectives come from
  • recognize and use your abilities to contribute towards a more equitable, diverse, inclusive, and accessible workplace environment
