BIM Fundamentals I (EEAS 0130)

This course provides a broad introduction to BIM (Building Information Modeling). BIM is defined and the evolution of BIM is contrasted with traditional methods. The various dimensions of BIM throughout the project lifecycle and global, national, and regional adoption trends are presented. Other topics include benefits of BIM for design change management and potential of BIM to improve sustainability. 

Certifications: This course meets the requirements for and may be certified as Building Transformations Foundations – Theory: Introductory (T1). Our BIM Fundamentals I & II courses together meet the requirements for and may be certified as Building Transformations Foundations – Theory: Intermediate (T2).

Learning outcomes

Upon completion of this course, you should be able to:

  • understand the history, terminology, principles, and strategies underlying BIM
  • identify BIM practices and standards in the construction industry, and analyze their impact throughout the lifecycle of a building or a facility
  • understand how BIM fits into different project delivery types
  • understand the digital asset lifecycle
  • understand the various BIM-focused organizations and their influence on the industry
  • understand how project estimating, planning, and management take place on a BIM project 
  • understand how BIM can be used to improve environmental challenges, including sustainability
