The purpose of this page is to provide information to prospective applicants to the Rady Faculty of Health Sciences Dr. Gerald Niznick College of Dentistry at the University of Manitoba. This information outlines categories of admission, requirements, selection process, and deadlines.

This information is available with, and constitutes part of, the application. It is assumed that all applicants have read and understood it prior to submitting the completed application.

Section 2: Eligibility Requirements
A. Academic requirements
All applicants must meet the following requirements:
1. Completed coursework
- Complete course requirements: Candidates must successfully complete all required university degree-level courses with assigned credit hours and grades. See Section 2: Eligibility requirements, A. Academic requirements, 3. Required courses.
- Two full fall/winter sessions: Candidates must complete two regular fall/winter sessions, each with at least 24 new and graded credit hours. Alternatively, candidates can fulfill the academic requirements through the University of Manitoba Health Careers Access Program (available to Indigenous applicants).
- Required credit hours: Successfully complete the credit hours listed in the Required courses table. See Section 2: Eligibility requirements, A. Academic requirements, 3. Required courses.
Applicants can apply during the academic year if they complete these requirements by April. Only those who complete the requirements and are granted an interview will be considered in the final selection process.
Notes:
- Eliminating first program of study: Applicants may request the removal of their first program of study if there is an eight-year gap between their last registration in that program and the beginning of their second program (See Section 4: Selection process, B. AGPA calculation).
- AP/IB courses: Advanced Placement (AP) or International Baccalaureate (IB) courses can be used to meet core course requirements but cannot be used to fulfill the minimum 24 new credit hours. Applicants must submit their AP/IB transcripts to the University of Manitoba by the document deadline. See Section 2: Eligibility requirements, A. Academic requirements, 1. Completed coursework.
- Diploma programs: Two- or three-year diploma coursework cannot be used to fulfill the 24 credit hour requirement.
2. Canadian Dental Aptitude Test (DAT)
- Test requirement: All applicants must have written the Canadian English Dental Aptitude Test (DAT), meeting minimum results by December 1st, 2024, to be eligible. See Section 4: Selection process, C. Results of the Canadian Dental Aptitude Test (DAT).
- Best scores considered: For applicants granted an interview, the best single DAT scores obtained between February 2021 and December 1st will be used in the final score.

Please note that courses taken external to the University of Manitoba are reviewed each year and subject to change. Applicants should check the Transfer Credit Equivalency Database to ensure the course work they have taken is acceptable for direct equivalence to the required University of Manitoba courses.

Notes relating to required courses
- Core courses: All core courses must be full courses or their equivalents. If you took courses outside a university in Manitoba, they might need to be more extensive to meet the University of Manitoba’s course content requirements.
- Science courses: All full science courses must include a laboratory component.
- Non-Canadian transcripts: If you're using transcripts from a non-Canadian institution, you need to provide syllabi for all core science courses. The syllabi must include course descriptions, assignments, required readings, texts, and labs. If you can’t provide a syllabus, you’ll need to complete an acceptable course equivalent at a Canadian institution.
- Pre-dental education outside Manitoba: If your pre-dental education was not completed in Manitoba, you may still be considered if you have taken courses deemed equivalent by the University of Manitoba. Eligibility for other Canadian dental programs does not guarantee eligibility for the University of Manitoba dental program.
B. Canadian Residency
All applicants must be a Canadian citizen or Permanent Resident of Canada at the time of application.
C. English Language Proficiency Requirements
If English is not your primary language and you do not qualify for a waiver under the University of Manitoba’s English language proficiency regulations, you will need to demonstrate proficiency in English.

- Test validity: Results from most language tests, including TOEFL, IELTS, and Duolingo, expire two years from the test date. Ensure your test scores are valid at the start of classes and confirm their validity.
D. Categories of Applicants
The first-year dental class will consist of 29 individuals. Applicants will be considered in three categories, as outlined below. You must indicate your preferred category on the application form. Applicants applying for the Individual or Canadian Indigenous categories will also be considered in the General category. The Committee reserves the right to reassign applicants to the appropriate category or categories based on the information provided in the application form.
- General Applicant Category
- Allocation: A minimum of 20 out of 29 positions will be allocated to the General Applicant Category.
- Eligibility: This category is for applicants whose personal or academic backgrounds do not qualify them for the other two categories.
Academic Requirements
Applicants must complete the academic requirements as outlined in Section 2: Eligibility requirements and Section 4: Selection process.
Canadian Dental Aptitude Test
Applicants must take the Canadian English DAT as outlined in Section 2: Eligibility requirements, A. Academic requirements, 2. Canadian Dental Aptitude Test (DAT). You need to achieve the minimum scores and average by the application deadline. For more details, see:

Interview
Here’s what you need to know about the interview process:
- Format: CDA structured interview.
- Duration: Up to 35 minutes.
- Panel: Interviewed by two individuals.
- Eligibility: All eligible applicants will be interviewed by the University of Manitoba.
- Transfer scores: Not accepted.
- ID requirement: Bring a government-issued photo ID to the interview.
2. Canadian Indigenous Applicant Category
A maximum of five positions in the first-year dental program may be allocated to applicants from the Indigenous populations of Canada.
Not all positions may be filled in this category due to the competitive nature of all categories.
Academic requirements
Applicants must complete the academic requirements as outlined in Section 2: Eligibility requirements and Section 4: Selection process. You also have the option to fulfill these requirements through the University of Manitoba Health Careers Access Program.
Canadian Dental Aptitude Test

Autobiographical Sketch
Here’s what you need to know about submitting your autobiographical sketch:
- Submission: Provide an autobiographical sketch, not exceeding 800 words.

- Reapplication: If you reapply, your sketch must show evidence of improvement or advancement in the qualities, experiences, and attributes relevant to your consideration in this category.
Proof of Canadian Indigenous Status
Here’s what you need to know about submitting your documentation:
- Submission: Provide documentation such as a status card, Manitoba Metis Federation membership card, or an equivalent.
- Alternative: If you don’t have the above, submit a letter of verification from your community.
- Timing: Ensure this documentation is submitted at the time of application.
Interview
Here’s what you need to know about the interview process:
- Panel: You will be interviewed by a single panel, including Indigenous members.
- Format: The interview will use a non-structured format.
- Duration: The interview will last up to 45 minutes.
- ID requirement: Bring a government-issued photo ID to the interview.
3. Individual Applicant Category
A maximum of four positions in the first year program may be allocated to the Individual Applicant Category, with a maximum of two positions being allocated to the Canadian Indigenous Applicant Category.
Not all positions may be filled in this category due to the competitive nature of all categories.
The Individual Applicant Category will consist of applicants who:
- hold a Master or PhD degree or who have successfully completed all requirements to hold a Master or PhD degree at time of application. Preference will be given to applicants holding Master or PhD degrees that have been obtained in a health related field, or
- have recent work experience in areas acceptable to the Committee as relevant to the health sciences.
Academic Requirements
Applicants with a Master’s or PhD degree, or recent work experience, must:
- Complete academic requirements: As outlined in Section 2: Eligibility requirements and Section 4: Selection process.
- Provide documentation: Submit a transcript confirming the completion of the degree or a letter from the university stating that all degree requirements have been met.
Canadian Dental Aptitude Test
To complete your application, you need to meet the following requirements for the Canadian English DAT:

- Achieve minimum scores: You must attain the minimum scores and average by the application deadline.

Interview
Applicants who hold a dental degree from outside of Canada may obtain a dental degree from the University of Manitoba through completion of the International Dentist Degree Program (IDDP).

Section 3: Application Process & Deadlines
Applicants are required to submit one application whereby they can rank up to 5 choices.
A. Application Fees
Here’s what you need to know about application fees and correspondence:
- Canadian/Permanent Residents: The fee is $100.00. For details, refer to Section 2: Eligibility Requirements, B. Canadian Residency.
- Payment: Your application will not be considered received until you have submitted the application and paid the non-refundable fee by the deadline.
- Correspondence: All updates and decision information will be sent via email and posted to your application portal.

C. Required Application Documentation
The following documents will be required to complete your application:
Interim official transcripts
Interim Official Transcripts: Submit interim official transcripts showing all previously completed coursework and current registration when applying or shortly after.
Requirements: Include transcripts from any university or college you attended, other than the University of Manitoba. This includes transcripts from exchange programs, transfers, and letters of permission.
Final official transcripts
Submission: Provide final official transcripts from any university or college attended, other than the University of Manitoba. This includes transcripts from exchange programs, transfers, and letters of permission. Note that student copies or photocopies are not acceptable. Transcripts become the property of the University of Manitoba and will not be returned.
Translation: For international transcripts in languages other than English, provide an English translation. The translation must be done by the issuing institution or a certified English translator. Include a copy of the original document with the translation. The translator must place both the original language document and the English translation in sealed envelopes and sign across the seal.
Grade changes: Notify the Admissions Office in writing of any deferred exams or grade changes. All final grades, including any changes, must be submitted by the document deadline to be included in the final selection process.
Advanced Placement (AP) / International Baccalaureate (IB) official transcripts
Submission: If you are using Advanced Placement (AP) or International Baccalaureate (IB) courses in your application for the Adjusted Grade Point Average (AGPA) or to meet application requirements, you must submit official AP or IB transcripts.

DAT scores must be released to the University of Manitoba
Proof of Canadian Citizenship, Permanent Resident Status, or Refugee Status
Requirement: If you were born outside of Canada, you must provide proof of Canadian Citizenship, Permanent Resident Status, or Refugee Status.
Submission: Upload a PDF document of the proof to the online application before submission.

Immunization requirements
Essential skills and abilities document
Before starting the program, you will need to complete an essential skills and abilities document. Here’s what you should know:
Completion: All candidates offered a position must complete and sign this document.
Requirements: Familiarize yourself with the College's Essential Skills and Abilities for Admission, Promotion, and Graduation in the DMD program document.
Accommodation: If you cannot meet the essential skills requirements, the College will try to accommodate you according to its policies. However, the Essential Student Abilities Committee may review your case and could suspend or terminate you from the program if the guidelines cannot be met.
Adult criminal record and child and adult abuse registry checks
As part of the admission process, you will need to undergo several background checks. Here’s what you need to do:
Self-declaration: You must complete a self-declaration for both criminal record and abuse registry checks.
Official checks: An official adult criminal record check is required by the time of registration and annually thereafter. Official checks for child and adult abuse registries will be applied for through the College on the first day of class.
Compliance: Adhere to any University policy on criminal record and abuse checks in effect at the time of registration.
Section 4: Selection Process
A. Citizenship and Residence
The Admissions Committee prioritizes applicants from Manitoba. Here’s what you need to know about being classified as a Manitoba applicant:
- Graduates from Manitoba high schools: If you have graduated from a high school in Manitoba, you qualify as a Manitoba applicant.
- Degrees from Manitoba universities: If you hold a recognized degree from a university in Manitoba before applying, you are considered a Manitoba applicant.
- Consecutive academic studies in Manitoba: If you have completed at least two consecutive years of full-time academic studies at a university in Manitoba while physically residing there before applying, you qualify.
- Residence in Manitoba: If you have been a resident of Manitoba for a minimum of two years following high school, you are eligible. This residence period is not considered broken if you were temporarily out of the province for vacation, short-term volunteer work, employment, or as a full-time student.
The University of Manitoba allocates a minimum of 25 out of 29 positions in the first-year dental program to Manitobans. The official date of your application will determine your citizenship or residence status.
B. Calculation of the Adjusted Grade Point Average (AGPA)
For applicants with two years of pre-dental studies:
- Multiply the average on CORE courses by 2.
- Multiply the average on the lowest year by 1.
- Multiply the average on the best year by 3.
- Add these values together.
- Divide the total by 6.
For applicants with three or more years of pre-dental studies:
- Multiply the average on CORE courses by 2.
- Multiply the average on the lowest year by 0.
- Multiply the average on the best year by 3.
- Multiply the average of each additional full academic year by 1.
- Add these values together.
- Divide the total by the total number of years used (e.g., 6, 7, 8).
Notes on AGPA Calculation
Responsibility for Updates
It is your responsibility to inform the Admissions Office in writing of any deferred exams or grade changes. All final grades, including any changes, must be submitted by the document deadline. Grade changes will not be accepted after this deadline. If a grade is not available by the deadline, an ‘F’ grade will be used in the final admission determination and calculation.
GPA Calculation Details
- Retained grades: If a grade is retained on your record but excluded from your institutional GPA calculation, it will still be used to meet admission requirements and calculate your GPA for the University of Manitoba.
- New credit hours: You must submit grades from at least 24 new credit hours (courses never previously taken) per Fall/Winter session (September - April) for your year's average to be included in the ranking process.
- Satisfactory/Pass/Fail grades: Grades marked as “Satisfactory” or “Pass/Fail” will be excluded from the Core Average, AGPA, and sessional credit hour count, and will not be considered for meeting admission requirements.
Advanced Placement (AP) and International Baccalaureate (IB) Courses
- Use for core requirements: AP/IB courses can be used to fulfill core course requirements if submitted in writing at the time of application. However, AP/IB courses cannot be used to meet the minimum new credit hour requirement (see Section 2: Eligibility Requirements, A. Academic Requirements, 1. Completed Coursework).
Repeating Courses
- Core subjects: You may repeat up to six credit hours of core subjects (e.g., Chemistry 1 and Chemistry 2). Only the higher grades obtained will be used in the core average calculation.
- Additional repeats: If you repeat more than six credit hours of core subjects, all additional grades not included in the repeat will be averaged into the core average.
Elimination of Older Grades
- Request for exclusion: You may request the elimination of grades completed at least eight years prior to starting a more recent program of studies for the purpose of calculating your AGPA. This request must be made in writing at the time of application.
- Requirements for recent studies: All academic requirements, as specified in Section 2: Eligibility Requirements, must be met in the more recent program of studies.
C. The Results of the Canadian Dental Aptitude Test (DAT)
In the interview selection process applicants will not be considered for admission if they have, in the best Canadian English DAT score a PAT score of less than 14.
Only the average of the Reading Comprehension, Biology, Chemistry and PAT scores (DAT average) from the single best Canadian English DAT of the last three years will be used in the calculation of the overall score.
D. Selection of Applicants for Interview

F. Tie Breaking Procedure for Offers
In the event of a tie, the following procedure will be used:
- Increase the number of significant figures used in the calculation.
- Where a tie still exists, the application that was received first will be used to break the tie.
All completed applications are time stamped upon submission; in the case of a paper application, these applications will be time stamped after they have been entered into the system by a University of Manitoba Admissions Office staff member.
G. Notification of Decision
Viewing the decision
- Decisions will be posted to your application portal.
- Log into your portal to view your decision and to accept or decline the offer.
- It is crucial to regularly check your emails and application portal.
Accepting the offer
- You have 5 business days to respond to an offer.
- To accept, you must pay a non-refundable deposit of $1000.00 within this period.
- The deposit will be credited toward your first-year fees.
- If you decline the offer or miss the payment deadline, the offer will lapse and be considered declined.
H. The Incoming Class of 2023
In 2023, we received 211 applications for the first-year Dentistry class. Of these, 79 applicants were shortlisted and granted an interview. The class consists of 29 students.
Section 5: Reconsiderations & Appeals
If you wish to have your application reconsidered, please follow these steps:
- Submit a request: Send your request in writing to the Chair of the Selection Committee within ten (10) business days of the posted decision date. Most inquiries can be resolved at this level without further action.
- Further appeal: If you wish to appeal the reconsideration decision, you will need to follow the Senate Committee on Admission Appeals Procedures.
- Review procedures: Appeals focus on whether the Selection Committee adhered to published policies and procedures, not on subjective issues or the merits of the application.

Section 6: Counselling of Applicants
The Dr. Gerald Niznick College of Dentistry and Admissions Office can assist you with counselling regarding admission. However, they will not provide specific instructions on what course of action to take. Instead, they will provide you with the information needed to make your own decisions. Please note the following:
- Seek advice wisely: While it is encouraged to discuss your plans with advisors, be cautious of second- and third-hand information about admission policies, as it may not be accurate.
- No guarantees: No university official can guarantee admission. Admission decisions are made by the Committee based on annual competition.
- Request written responses: Supplement any personal enquiries with a written request to receive an official written response. Only written responses will be considered as evidence of advice given. For contact information, see Section 8: Contact Information.
