I investigate the dynamic relationship between the self and interpersonal relationships, focusing on relationship initiation, self-esteem, and gender diversity.
I have three main research interests. First, I focus on romantic relationships with an emphasis on relationship initiation. Much of this work intersects with my second and third research interests and thus, focuses on how insecurity and gender influence how romantic relationships begin. Recently, our research on the friends-to-lovers pathway has investigated how romantic desire can form within a platonic friendship. Second, I am keenly interested in the consequences of insecurity (e.g., low self-esteem; insecure attachment). Here, I investigate the consequences (and perhaps the sources) of insecurity in close relationships. Within this broad research area, I have also taken an interest in social stereotypes about being insecure and the measurement of insecurity. Third, I am interested in issues surrounding gender diversity, gender roles and attitudes and women’s unique experiences. For example, I study the use and creation of inclusive gender demographic measures.
