Careers in Interiors by Penny Shebaylo
I've Graduated — Now What?
We’re going to explore the different career paths Interior Designers and University of Manitoba alumni have taken beyond traditional design firms — the specialties they’ve mastered and grown into.
Penny will share her journey to finding the right design role that aligns with her skill set and passion, and how her education at the University of Manitoba prepared her for the various roles she’s taken on — both traditional and non-traditional.
Design is present in everything we pursue, because it shapes the way we are trained to think. We enter the workforce with more than just a design education — we are all made up of different skills and passions.
So, how do you want to use yours?
Penny Shebaylo is an alumna of the 2001 Interior Design Program at the University of Manitoba. She is the business owner of Workroom Office Interiors, based in Calgary and Edmonton, Alberta. Penny has spent most of her professional career in the contract interiors industry, working as a consultant, furniture specialist, and business developer.
She has collaborated with some of the biggest brands in the industry—Herman Miller, Knoll, and Haworth—through one of the largest dealerships in Canada, as well as with several independent dealerships.
Penny was drawn to the field by the business side of design, as she has always had a creative and entrepreneurial mindset. She describes herself as a “linear creative thinker.” Her education at the University of Manitoba prepared her to think outside the box, which has given her a competitive edge in solving problems and winning deals in the business world.
