Building with Bio-Based & Local Materials Workshop

Bio-based and local materials are essential in addressing contemporary environmental challenges and offer a pathway for remote communities to achieve energy and resource sovereignty. This hands-on workshop aims to introduce a select and diverse group of participants to construction techniques that utilize bio-based and local materials. Over the course of two days, attendees will contribute to building products and prototypes using materials such as hemp, mycelium, earth, stone, and waste by-products. Guest speakers and facilitators will lead discussions about the potential and challenges of integrating bio-based and local materials into the design and construction industries. Lessons learned in this workshop will be shared with our research partners across Canada, contributing to a larger conversation as part of the SSHRC project: Quality in Canada’s Built Environment.
