WHAT!? WHY? WOW!
WHAT!? WHY? WOW! FABLab Development Workshops
Join the FABLab on this 'WWW' series of 1 hour workshops, where we will explore a range of techniques towards digitizing the material and materializing the digital.
These fall 2021 development workshop sessions will be hosted by Jason Hare, the facility manager of the Faculty of Architectures, FABLab.
These sessions will look to develop knowledge through each successive workshop, towards broadening the field of one’s own understanding around the subject matter of digital fabrication, digital craft and ultimately digital literacy.
Each development workshop will be recorded and permanently hosted on the Microsoft Office Team "FAUM Digital Literacy", to be accessed at any time by any individual within the University of Manitoba.
The 'Live' development workshops and their subject matter will be as follows:

Digital Modelling | 12:00 pm
October 12, 2021
Lasers + Routers | 12:00 pm

Individual Workshop Description
October 5, 2021
Digital Modelling | 12:00 pm
Wondering what a 3D modelling environment is? How to navigate it? What about its potential use as a communication medium? Join us on this 1-hour workshop. We will demonstrate some basic principles of any 3D modelling environment, through the Rhino3D software interface. This workshop is an introduction on the basics of CAD software. It will be recorded and available for viewing on the TEAMS platform upon completion.
October 12, 2021
Lasers + Routers | 12:00 pm
Wondering what a Computer Numerically Controlled device can do? What about file preparation for engaging with such tools? Join us on this 1-hour workshop, where we will go over the basics of how to engage with laser cutting and CNC routing in the FABLab. You will be shown how to prepare digital drawings and the potential applications within the field of Design. This development workshop will be recorded and available for viewing on the TEAMS platform upon completion.
October 19, 2021
3D Printing | 12:00 pm
Wondering what geometry can be 3D printed? What about modelling and material opportunities in 3D printing? Join us on this 1-hour workshop, where we will navigate the basic information needed to engage with any 3D printing or additive manufacturing technologies. This development workshop will be recorded and available for viewing on the TEAMS platform upon completion.
October 26, 2021
Point Cloud Maps | 12:00 pm
What the heck is a point cloud? Why is it relevant to the field of Design? What tools are needed to construct a point cloud? Is it different than The Cloud? Join us on this 1-hour workshop. Where we will reveal the introductory principles towards point cloud construction and manipulation for use in studio projects, site mapping and seeding the positioning for geometry formation. This development workshop will be recorded and available for viewing on the TEAMS platform upon completion.
November 2, 2021
Parametric Modelling | 12:00 pm
Interested in non-planar geometry construction? Needing to ‘seed’ 10,000 trees on a digital site? Need to test out a few hundred iterations of a site shadow study? Join us on this 1-hour workshop, where we will introduce you to the concept of parametric modelling as a tool towards thinking about the relationships that could be mapped between space. This development workshop will be recorded and available for viewing on the TEAMS platform upon completion.
