Background

I was born in London, England in 1937 and immigrated directly to Winnipeg in 1948. I attended Lord Robert’s School and Gordon Bell High School before moving on to United College for my B.A. I was active in a variety of sports especially rugby, soccer and curling. During the year 1958-59 I worked as a social worker before entering the M.A. program in history at the University of Manitoba. In 1961 I was awarded an I.O.D.E Overseas Fellowship and entered the doctoral program in history at King’s College, University of London, England. I graduated in 1965 and joined the staff of St. John’s college, University of Manitoba, in 1965 where I taught until my retirement in December 2001. My teaching was focussed on imperial and commonwealth history and Canadian history. During my years at the College I served on many College committees, on the executive of the Faculty of Arts and Science 1969-71 and on the University Senate. I was chair of the Department of History at the University 1982-85 and 1990-2001. In 1995 I was named Administrator of the Year by UMFA.
