Research and teaching interests

The overall goal of my research is to discover and document biological novelty from extreme environments. By using modern omics approaches, microbial communities can be interrogated to understand who is there, what they are doing and their functions within the community and how they evolve within the context of their environment.

These questions provide opportunities to identify, name and describe novel microbes to discover and understand novel or interesting physiologies or community interactions and to interrogate the environmental drivers and genomic restrictions that shape their evolutionary trajectories.
