Research summary

Dr. Gillman’s main research interests are in medical/surgical education and simulation.

Work within technical simulation has included development of virtual reality ultrasound simulation, development of models for ultrasound simulation and development of metrics for evaluation of ultrasound performance.

Within crisis simulation, work includes developing strategies for improving communication and tele-resuscitation, in addition to stress response evaluation during crisis.

Dr. Gillman is the founder of the national Simulated Trauma and Resuscitation Team Training course and continues to work on course development and innovation.

Biography

Dr. Gillman is an associate professor in the surgery department at UM where he practices as an acute care/trauma surgeon and intensivist.

He completed medical school and surgical residency at UM. He subsequently completed a master’s degree in medical education at the University of Dundee followed by fellowship training in critical care medicine and trauma surgery at the University of Calgary.

His research interests include point of care ultrasound, surgical education and multidisciplinary crisis simulation.

He is founder of the national Simulated Trauma and Resuscitation Team Training (STARTT) course and editor of the Trauma Team Dynamics textbook.

He is also a proud parent of four energetic young kids.
