Dr. Michelle Driedger From the department head

As you will have noticed, this newsletter is coming out much later than usual, and since the period it covers (October 2023 to January 2024), much has transpired. So, I invite you to jump into a time machine with me and suspend reality for a bit because some of what is reported in this newsletter has already changed.

As previously reported, Dr. Sharon Bruce stepped down as head of department at the end of October 2023. Sharon has done an incredible job throughout her tenure, especially since we started sheltering in place mid-March 2020 at the start of the pandemic, through a gradual and then full return to in person teaching, an UMFA strike, and navigating the discussions about a prospective creation of the College of Community and Global Health. Sharon has also been an incredible resource to me, helping to make sure that nothing got lost during the transition. On behalf of all the faculty, staff and students, I thank you for your unwavering service and commitment to CHS.

Since starting in my role, November 1, 2023, it has been quite a ride! I have used a few descriptors in my early days and weeks on the job, but there are two images that I feel helps capture the level of productivity of the incredible members that make up Community Health Sciences: 1) it is like running a marathon at a sprinters pace; and 2) it is like stepping onto a bullet train with one foot still on the platform with the train already in motion. Shortly after my start, CHS also welcomed its new Business Manager, Kristin Bergen. CHS folks have been incredibly generous and patient as Kristin and I have learned our new roles.

During this time, we also said goodbye to Dr. Joe Kaufert, who passed away in early October. Joe was a legend. He was an incredible champion and mentor to everyone in the Department, and he worked tirelessly to make population and public health relevant to all. I used to co-teach UGME sessions with Joe, and he was a hard act to follow because when he lectured, he used magic to capture the imagination of learners while tailoring the tricks performed to understanding the health system. He carried that sense of wonder and deep connection in all things, and his absence has been deeply felt.

In addition to looking after the day-to-day business of the department, I have been actively holding Listening Tours (no promise/no agenda meetings) with different constituencies to help guide our work in creating a new College of Community and Global Health. I have valued learning from everyone throughout this time. And while you all know the outcome of that work, let’s try to remain in the time machine!

Just know that although the newsletter is late, the truly important things that keeps our department in motion have not been delayed. A commitment I have maintained since I started in this role follows the spirit Maya Angelou: to do the best I can until I know better; and once I know better, do better.

Undergraduate program updates

News and updates from the undergraduate program.

Service learning update

The Service Learning curriculum for undergraduate medical students has been an ongoing focus during the 2023/2024 academic year. Over the past 18 months, the Service Learning team worked collaboratively with community co-educators and medical students through a series of listening groups. These discussions reimagined the curriculum's learning objectives to align more closely with community perspectives and priorities.

Thanks to the dedication of community co-educators, the updated learning objectives received approval from UGME curricular governance committees and were successfully implemented in September 2023. This initiative was made possible through a SOTL (Scholarship of Teaching and Learning) Seed grant from the University of Manitoba. The outcomes of this work have been presented at the International Congress on Academic Medicine in Quebec City (2023), the Health Professions Education Scholarship Day at the University of Manitoba (2023), and featured in the online magazine Together: Stories of Collective Impact by the Centre for Advancing Collaborative Health Care and Education (2023).

2023 Fall Homecoming – Celebrating the Class of 1963

On September 14, 2023, the Class of 1963 reunited for a memorable Homecoming celebration at the Human Ecology Building. Former classmates connected, shared stories, and revisited familiar spaces, including the practice apartment suites integral to their home economics training.

The Faculty of Agricultural and Food Sciences and the Department of Food and Nutritional Sciences provided updates on their latest research and initiatives. Dr. Javier Mignone and Shelly Goodacre from the Department of Community Health Sciences presented the transformation of the former Family Social Sciences curriculum into the current Bachelor of Health Studies and Bachelor of Health Sciences programs under the Interdisciplinary Health Program (IHP).

A highlight of the event was the introduction of a new pathway for students aspiring to become home economics teachers. Through the Health Promotion and Education concentration in the Bachelor of Health Studies, students can now gain essential qualifications in family studies and nutrition, key components of home economics education.

Celebrating Dr. Punam Mehta’s achievement

CHS Health Advocacy Award for third-year medical students

In their third year, medical students participate in the Physician Development Curriculum (PDC), which emphasizes developing CanMEDS competencies beyond the Medical Expert role. These competencies include leadership, communication, scholarship, and health advocacy. The CHS contributes to this curriculum by offering two series of PDC sessions, one on Health Equity and another on Health Advocacy.

Health Advocacy Series

The Health Advocacy series comprises seven sessions where students learn about physician advocacy at the policy level. Topics include written and oral communication for advocacy, media training, and presenting to government. A special session on Indigenous Health advocacy is delivered in partnership with the Indigenous Health course. The series culminates in students working in small groups to create a briefing note and cover letter advocating for a policy change aimed at improving the health of Manitobans.

Transition to UMSRI system for evaluations

The Department of Community Health Sciences is pleased to announce a shift from paper evaluations to the UMSRI system. This transition will allow all student evaluations to be securely stored online, with student feedback compiled electronically in a confidential and secure manner. This move enhances both efficiency and privacy in the evaluation process.

Events

  • MILC Club members celebrated National Breastfeeding Week in 2023

MILC (Manitoba Interdisciplinary Lactation Centre) is a research consortium dedicated to understanding the biological and societal factors that influence breastfeeding and the mechanistic basis for the health benefits of human milk feeding for mothers and children. The Centre was launched in 2020 and is co-directed by Dr. Meghan Azad and Natalie Rodriguez. MILC Club, the primary knowledge translation arm of this Centre, is an interdisciplinary group of researchers, trainees, and knowledge users (healthcare providers and community stakeholders) interested in breastfeeding, chest feeding, human milk and lactation.

October 1 – 7 is National Breastfeeding Week, and to celebrate and promote breastfeeding, MILC Club members came together and set up an information booth (October 4 and 5, 2023). Led by CHS student Narges Khodabandehloo, these booths were set up in the Brodie Centre of the University of Manitoba and HSC Women’s Hospital.
