As curriculum co-director for Undergraduate Medical Education (UGME) in the Department of Community Health Sciences (CHS), my passion is to undertake renewal of curriculum content to provide students with stimulating, relevant, topical and practical information regarding current issues in population and public health, in collaboration with the curriculum director and staff of the CHS UGME office.
Teaching drives my quest and passion for life-long learning. I love to teach because I love to learn, and I love to be around co-learners. Placing myself into teaching opportunities provides continual co-learning opportunities. Therefore, considering students as my co-learners and “not-quite-yet-qualified” colleagues, my teaching approaches can be best summed up as striving for simplicity, utility, and respect.
I pride myself and enjoy being able to translate complex material into terms and concepts that are simpler and easier to remember. Simplicity is one of the core concepts of my teaching philosophy. If the subject matter isn’t useful, then I don’t feel that it is worth teaching. What I find students really appreciate in their teaching sessions are those “pearls” that are not necessarily found in textbooks. Hence, my teaching focusses on the most useful and helpful information.
I make it a point in my teaching sessions to inform students of the utility of their attendance and reassure them that they will not have wasted their time with me. I expect to receive respect from students, only because I expect that they will have experienced the utmost respect that I have for them. I consider students my co-learners and my colleagues.
