Accessibility of collections
The University of Manitoba Libraries is committed to delivering services and resources to its diverse user groups in compliance with The Human Rights Code (Manitoba), following the standards specified under The Accessibility for Manitobans Act and Regulations, the University of Manitoba Accessibility Policy and Procedures, and Respectful Work and Learning Environment Policy and Procedure.
New acquisitions
The Libraries will endeavor to acquire new content in an accessible format, balancing this goal with the aim of responding to discipline-specific requirements for resources in a preferred format. This includes, but is not limited to:
- Electronic books and journals, in the most accessible format available
- Captioned and described video, and video with transcriptions available
- Electronic resources that are made available on accessible platforms
An effort is made to negotiate licenses for electronic resources which include vendor obligations concerning the accessibility of their platforms and content, and the Libraries’ right to alter or modify the licensed materials as necessary to provide an equivalent level of access to all our authorized users. We support and encourage consortia or third parties negotiating license on behalf of UML to include similar language.
Active offers for existing collection materials
The Libraries will endeavor to provide material in an appropriate alternate format when it receives an accessibility accommodation request for an item already held in its collection.
Responsibility
It is the responsibility of the liaison librarian, or other individual making acquisition selections, to incorporate accessibility considerations into their decisions.
If you have any questions, contact the Associate University Librarian, Collections.
