ITL Program Frequently Asked Questions
Admissions
Q: Am I guaranteed admission to the Internationally Trained Lawyer Program if I meet the admission requirements?
A: No. Admission to the Internationally Trained Lawyer Program is competitive. Meeting the admission requirements does not guarantee acceptance.
Q: When are admissions decisions made?
A: Admissions decisions for the Internationally Trained Lawyer Program are made in late spring each year.
Q: I am in the process of completing a law degree. Can I apply to the Internationally Trained Lawyer Program prior to graduation?
A: All applications to the Internationally Trained Lawyer Program must be complete by the deadline to be considered for the next cohort and require a current NCA assessment. NCA requires final transcripts from the university from which you will graduate as a to issue its assessment report. We cannot grant admission to any candidate whose application materials are not complete by the application deadline.
Q: The NCA has assigned more courses and/or an in-person learning requirement which cannot be met by one of your micro-diplomas alone. What are my options?
A: Each student’s pathway to obtaining a Certificate of Qualification from the NCA is unique and dependent on several factors. While one or both micro-diplomas will meet the needs of many internationally trained students, the Internationally Trained Lawyer Program is also designed to help students meet more complex assigned requirements of the NCA, including in-person learning. Please contact us to discuss your specific needs.
Q: I have been exempted from or have already completed a language requirement by the NCA. Do I still need to meet the University of Manitoba Faculty of Law’s English Language Proficiency requirements to be admitted?
A: Yes. Exemptions granted by the NCA or completion of the NCA’s language requirements do not apply to the Faculty of Law’s English language requirements for admission. You must meet the Faculty of Law’s specific requirements.
Language Requirements
Q: I was assigned a language proficiency requirement by the NCA. Can I take a test that satisfies both the NCA and the University of Manitoba Faculty of Law?
A: Unfortunately, no. The NCA and the University of Manitoba Faculty of Law have different and separate language proficiency requirements. You will need to meet each institution’s requirements independently.
Q: What are the language requirements for admission to the University of Manitoba Faculty of Law?
Q: How can I obtain an exemption from the University of Manitoba Faculty of Law’s English Language Proficiency requirements?
A: Exemptions are only granted if you possess a University degree completed in English from Canada or one of the countries listed on the English Language Proficiency Test Exemption List. There are no case-by-case exemptions. If you do not qualify for an exemption, you will need to demonstrate proficiency by completing one of the accepted English language tests.
Can I enroll in classes on a course-by-course/per-credit hour basis?
You must apply to and be accepted into one of our programs to take courses at UM Law. It is not possible to enroll in courses on an individual or occasional basis.
