IDEA START Works

IDEA START Works is a collaborative co-working and wet-lab space designed to ignite creativity, foster entrepreneurship, and accelerate innovation within the University of Manitoba community. This initiative provides students, faculty, and early-stage innovators with an accessible environment to ideate, prototype, and launch ventures.

IDEA START Works empowers innovators by offering a collaborative space to turn ideas into impactful solutions for Manitoba and beyond. We drive cross-disciplinary collaboration, support early-stage ventures with resources and mentorship, and build a vibrant community for networking, knowledge-sharing, and entrepreneurial growth.

Located in the Innovation Hub building at Smart Park, IDEA START Works is positioned at the heart of a thriving innovation ecosystem.

Smart Park Innovation Hub's Collision Space

Access to the Innovation Hub's bookable Collision Space on the main floor, featuring:

  • Large open atrium
  • Two state-of-the-art multi-purpose rooms accommodating 50 people each (100 combined)
  • Video presentation walls
  • Built-in audio systems and podiums with microphones
  • Kitchenettes and servery stations
  • Common meeting rooms
  • Licensed food service location with full-service kitchen
  • Outdoor patio

Ready to apply?

  • Entry into IDEA START Works is by application only
  • Each accepted applicant receives free access to IDEA START Works and all its supports and facilities for one six-month term
  • Applications are reviewed monthly by a selection committee
  • Applications can be submitted anytime; all applications for a month are reviewed in the first week of the following month
  • Selected applicants will be announced by the 7th of the month
  • Example: Apply by November 7th, hear back by December 7th
  • Seat allocation depends on availability; selection does not automatically guarantee seats
  • If seats are not immediately available, your 6-month term begins once seats are allocated (you can access other program benefits immediately)
  • At the end of your first term, you may apply to extend for one additional 6-month term based on progress and performance

Level 2 Wet Lab Space (Coming Soon)

IDEA START Works will include access to a Level 2 biosafety wet lab space, designed for innovators working in biotechnology, life sciences, and health sciences.

Planned features include:

  • Fully equipped wet lab facilities meeting Level 2 biosafety standards
  • Safety equipment, fume hoods, and secure material storage
  • Proximity to the co-working space for ease of collaboration and workflow
