Orientation and training
To receive access to the Live-Cell Imaging Facility (LCIF) equipment, you must first complete a mandatory training session. Users may only access equipment for which they have been trained.

We provide training and access to the four microscopy systems listed below.
The equipment at LCIF is operated on a cost-recovery basis and to ensure funds are available for equipment maintenance and repairs.
Consideration will be giving to faculty with limited funding (e.g., faculty in need of pilot data for a grant application.) Please contact us to discuss alternative arrangements that may better suit your individual needs.
Item | Cost per hour |
---|---|
One hour of use, up to 100 hours | $50 |
100 hours and beyond | $25 |
Labs that anticipate heavy use of LCIF equipment can choose to pre-pay at a flat rate of $8,000/year.
Charges will be based on the time entered in the online calendar PLUS any overtime recorded in the manual log book. A one-hour minimum charge will apply. Thereafter, billing will be in 30-minute increments, rounded-up to the nearest half-hour.
Supervisors will receive a summary of usage each month and charges will be applied quarterly to the FOP on record. The FOP may be changed at any time.
Rates are subject to change. Users and their supervisors will be informed of any user fee changes in advance.
To receive access to the Live-Cell Imaging Facility (LCIF) equipment, you must first complete a mandatory training session. Users may only access equipment for which they have been trained.
All Live-Cell Imaging Facility (LCIF) equipment is protected by card access. Users must first complete training, after which you may request card access. Those without card access will be limited to usage during business hours (9 a.m. - 5 p.m., Monday to Friday).
To reserve Live-Cell Imaging Facility (LCIF) equipment, you must first be granted a reservation account.
Those with reservation accounts can view the booking schedule and reserve space in our facilities. Reservations can be made no more than two weeks in advance and users may schedule a maximum of 20 hours per system per week (during business hours). If you expect to need more than the maximum hours weekly, contact us to discuss.
Our goal is to have equipment in top-shape and available for investigators when they need it. By following the facility guidelines, you can help avoid any unnecessary downtime or fees.
Before starting, check to see that system was left clean and in an operational state. Report any issues to the administrator immediately, as unreported issues will be attributed to the last scheduled user who will receive a warning. Repeat offenders may lose user privileges.
You are responsible for your own data storage. Users should be prepared to save data to an external hard drive or USB flash drive. External drives must be scanned with antivirus software to ensure they are free of virus. Data left on LCIF computers may be deleted at any time without notice in the event local disk space is needed for system operation.
If anything stops working during scheduled use, you must immediately report the issue to the system administrator. Maintenance and repairs are the responsibility of the LCIF. DO NOT attempt to repair or modify any imaging system yourself.
Users will not be billed for repairs under typical circumstances. However, your department may be charged for damage due to negligence or improper handling (for example, if the system was left running unattended over the weekend, a spill causing equipment damage, negligence causing virus or malware infection, etc.)
If a user is booked within the following hour, leave the system on. If not, turn it off. This is to prevent lasers and arc lamps being turned on and off repeatedly. Additionally, lasers should be kept on standby whenever possible to prolong their life.
If imaging is not complete at the end of your booked time-slot, you may continue to work as long as no one is waiting. If another user is booked immediately after, you must finish your task and hand-off the space. Failure to do so will incur a supplemental one-hour charge.
If no one is booked after your slot, imaging may continue. Please record this extra time as overtime in the manual logbook.
A reservation can be changed or cancelled any time, up to 24 hours before a booking.
To cancel, email noushin.ahmadpour@umanitoba.ca.
When cancelling, especially on short notice, it is your responsibility to ensure that a system was not left on for you by the previous scheduled user. Failure to do so will result in a charge equal to the duration the system was left on.
Reservations not cancelled will be charged for the time entered into the online calendar at the time of booking.
