The course has a strong political studies orientation. It will help students understand how the political process works. Special attention will be placed on explaining how programs are developed and implemented, passing from public aspirations, through development of legislation to administration of the program.

Learning outcomes

Upon completion of this course, you should be able to:

  • identify current debate and political perceptions of policy issues
  • identify and analyze how different political orientations impact issue definition
  • identify the various factors that influence and determine the public policy agenda
  • identify challenges and solutions concerning the various stages in the public policy process
  • assess the role of public consultations on politics and policy
  • identify policy instruments and why certain issues figure more prominently on the political agenda
  • assess and evaluate the policy impacts in determining policy success and failure from different political perspectives
  • evaluate the political conditions of modern governance
