Transitional Support for Rural and Northern Indigenous Students

The camp is open to incoming Indigenous students (First Nation, Inuit, Métis) from rural and northern communities who have applied to the University of Manitoba for Fall 2026, with a focus on first-time relocations to Winnipeg. This includes students from other provinces and those who might have attended high school outside of their community.

Where We First Stand helps students build essential life skills for living in the city, such as living independently, navigating transportation, and creating a monthly budget. The program provides tools and resources to help you confidently transition into your first year at university.

The program includes three key components:

  • A weeklong on-campus stay during the third week of July
  • Individual check-ins for personalized support
  • Monthly gatherings that begin with a shared meal, followed by one-on-one discussions and a fun group activity to strengthen connections

With Where We First Stand, you will:

  • Explore and make use of the many resources and supports available on campus
  • Get to know the City of Winnipeg
  • Connect with other first-year students
  • Build a strong foundation for success in your studies

I’m really glad I attended this camp—it gave me valuable skills, long-term support, and the chance to make great friends. Without it, I would’ve felt lost starting university. It was such a great opportunity, and I’m grateful I took part.
