About the Facility
The Laser Ablation Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometry (LA-ICP-MS) Laboratory at the University of Manitoba’s Department of Earth Sciences supports high-precision elemental and isotopic analyses for a wide range of research disciplines, including geochemistry, environmental science, biology, and materials science.
The lab houses a New Wave UP213 deep-UV Nd Laser Ablation System coupled to an Agilent 8900 Triple Quadrupole ICP-MS, enabling both in situ (solid) and solution-based analyses.
Instrumentation
- New Wave UP213 deep-UV Nd Laser Ablation System
Provides in situ microanalysis of solid samples with minimal sample preparation. - Agilent 8900 Triple Quadrupole ICP-MS
Delivers high sensitivity and low background detection for trace and ultra-trace element quantification and isotopic measurements.

Analytical Services
LA-ICP-MS
- In situ trace element analysis of rocks, minerals, meteorites, and biological samples such as fish otoliths, bones, claws, feathers, hair, nails, shells, teeth, and tissues
- Geochronological analyses including U–Pb, Rb–Sr, and Lu–Hf dating
- *Strontium (Sr) isotope ratio determination (contact for details)
SN-ICP-MS
- Trace and ultra-trace element quantification in liquid or digested samples
