Open house event for engineering

Faculty field trips

  • professor showing canoe
  • Field trips to the Price Faculty of Engineering offer students an inside look at how engineering concepts come to life. Each visit can be tailored to fit classroom interests, with options that include guided lab tours, live demonstrations and hands-on activities led by current students and professors. Please note that lab access may vary depending on availability.

Eng X

  • Professor showing students how to design their rovers
  • Piloted in 2025, Grade 10 students from Pembina Trails School Division participated in Eng X, a four week program at the Price Faculty of Engineering that introduces youth to engineering concepts, facilities and future pathways.

Students worked in small teams on a design and build challenge, where they were asked to improve a flawed prototype and prepare it for a competition. With support from faculty and student ambassadors, they gained hands-on experience with design thinking, testing and troubleshooting.

  • While the design and build challenge may vary by year, additional program aspects will always be included:

    • Presentations on engineering programs and admission requirements
    • Lab tours
    • Opportunities to connect with current students and learn about real engineering work

Eng X gives students a focused and practical look at what engineering is like and helps them make informed decisions about their future studies.

Career fairs and open house events

  • um_career_fair
  • Career fairs and open house events

Staff and students represent the faculty at events like high school hosted career fairs and UM’s Open House. Prospective students gain valuable resources and information about entry requirements, programs of study and what studying engineering is all about.

  • Engineering Access Program

There is a strong demand throughout Canada for engineers with an Indigenous background. The Engineering Access Program (ENGAP) provides opportunities for Indigenous students to get into, prepare for and succeed in the Price Faculty of Engineering.

ENGAP staff can share resources or give presentations to youth.

  • Student Ambassadors

Student Ambassadors are engaged students who act as a link between their academic program and future students as well as the community.

  • UM Engineering Society outreach

The University of Manitoba Engineering Society (UMES) hosts several outreach events throughout each academic year. High school students are invited to campus to experience engineering through a hands-on design activity, tours and presentations.

  • 2024_formula-electric team
  • Student design teams

From race cars and drones to robotics and concrete canoes, UM’s design teams add a wow factor to outreach. They don’t just display their creations — they engage with visitors, sharing insights into design, teamwork and competition.

Many teams have their own outreach activities that they can run with youth.
