The Healthy Smile Happy Child community outreach initiative works with families and caregivers, promoting early childhood oral health and early childhood caries prevention strategies across Manitoba.
We look at our outreach efforts as a way to grow our training and expand our understanding of treating patients. Our partners allow us to embed ourselves within a community or organization, giving our students, staff and faculty the chance to gain invaluable skills and experiences, all while giving back.
One of the most effective ways to train extends beyond curriculum-based learning. Our mentorship program matches dental students with practicing professionals who will help guide, advise and offer in-the-moment perspectives.
The Dr. Gerald Niznick College of Dentistry is looking for alumni dental professionals to join us in providing mentoring opportunities to students.
Mentees connect with their mentor during the first year of their studies. The hands-on mentoring and professional guidance focused relationship continues throughout the course of the students' four-year educational journey.
Through a partnership with the Manitoba Dental Hygienists Association (MDHA), we support the transition of dental hygiene students into the profession through open communication, guidance, and inspiration that benefits both the mentor and mentee.
The Dr. Gerald Niznick College of Dentistry is grateful to the many organizations that help support our programs and help our students achieve their full potential.
Dr. Patricia Kmet earned a bachelor of science in 1983 and graduated with her Doctor of Dental Medicine in 1987. For 35 years, Kmet practised at Regent Avenue Dental until her retirement in 2024. She was also a part-time instructor for a decade in the restorative and pediatric departments at the Dr. Gerald Niznick College of Dentistry.
Kmet’s honours from the dental community include being inducted into the Pierre Fauchard Academy and the International College of Dentists. She also received the MDA President’s Award of Merit in 2022.
Mary Bertone earned from UM a diploma in dental hygiene in 2005, a bachelor of science in dental hygiene in 2011 and a master of public health in 2015. Her provincial and national leadership roles have included serving as president of the Manitoba Dental Hygienists Association and the Canadian Dental Hygienists Association.
Throughout her career, Bertone has been committed to improving oral health care for underserved populations, including older adults, those with disabilities, care home residents, people in remote communities, Indigenous people and newcomers to Canada.
