Our community outreach program — housed within the dental college — mobilizes oral health care for patients who are unable to attend dental appointments in a standard clinic environment. Our students and staff treat patients on-site at each of our partner facilities:
The Healthy Smile Happy Child community outreach initiative works with families and caregivers, promoting early childhood oral health and early childhood caries prevention strategies across Manitoba.
We look at our outreach efforts as a way to grow our training and expand our understanding of treating patients. Our partners allow us to embed ourselves within a community or organization, giving our students, staff and faculty the chance to gain invaluable skills and experiences, all while giving back.
One of the most effective ways to train extends beyond curriculum-based learning. Our mentorship program matches dental students with practicing professionals who will help guide, advise and offer in-the-moment perspectives.
The Dr. Gerald Niznick College of Dentistry is looking for alumni dental professionals to join us in providing mentoring opportunities to students.
Mentees connect with their mentor during the first year of their studies. The hands-on mentoring and professional guidance focused relationship continues throughout the course of the students' four-year educational journey.
Through a partnership with the Manitoba Dental Hygienists Association (MDHA), we support the transition of dental hygiene students into the profession through open communication, guidance, and inspiration that benefits both the mentor and mentee.
UM Café is an online networking and mentoring platform powered by Ten Thousand Coffees. UM Café introduces students, alumni and industry partners to one another. They can then share a virtual cup of coffee and exchange knowledge and advice. Learn more by reading our story in UM Today.
The Dr. Gerald Niznick College of Dentistry is grateful to the many organizations that help support our programs and help our students achieve their full potential.
Dr. Aaron Kim, a 1987 dentistry alumnus and an associate professor of restorative dentistry, received the Alumni of Distinction Award from the UM Dental Alumni Association (UMDAA). The award recognizes Kim’s work organizing humanitarian dental missions that led to the establishment of dental clinics in Zambia, Zimbabwe and Guatemala.
Kellie Watson, who earned her diploma in dental hygiene in 1995, received the Alumni of Distinction Award from UM School of Dental Hygiene Alumni Association (UMSDHAA). She has made outstanding contributions to the profession as an administrator and instructor.
