The School of Art's journey began in September 1913, marking its first academic year. Established by the Winnipeg Industrial Bureau, a group of prominent businessmen, the School was created to nurture and cultivate the visual arts in Winnipeg.

The School of Art’s formation followed the creation of the Winnipeg Art Gallery (then the Winnipeg Museum of Fine Arts) in 1912. Over the next 37 years, the School and the Gallery would remain closely intertwined, sharing personnel, space, financial resources, and governance. Early Principals of the School often served dual roles as Directors or Curators of the Gallery.

In 1950, following the retirement of long-serving Principal Lionel LeMoine FitzGerald, the School officially joined the University of Manitoba, marking a transformative period that enriched both the School and the University.

Throughout its history, the School of Art has trained some of Canada’s most accomplished and recognized artists. Its legacy stems not only from its long history but also from its talented faculty and visionary leaders. This exhibition celebrates the School's 100th anniversary, tracing its evolution through the works of its Principals and Directors, who have shaped its remarkable journey.
