Introduction to Black & White Darkroom (Ages 15+ / Adults)
Learn the fundamentals of film photography and darkroom printing.
This course introduces participants to the complete black-and-white photographic process, from shooting 35mm film to developing negatives and producing prints in a traditional darkroom setting.
Participants will learn how to process film by hand, create contact sheets, and enlarge photographs, gaining a foundational understanding of analog photographic workflows. No previous experience is required, and the course emphasizes hands-on learning and material exploration.
Meet the instructor
Kristiane Church is an artist and filmmaker whose practice centres the latent image through photography, filmmaking, installation, performance, and textiles. She is particularly interested in the tactile and ephemeral qualities of image-making, working across still and moving images with a strong focus on analog darkroom processes.
Her interest in textiles often intersects with her photographic work, using fabric as both image substrate and sculptural element. Kristiane holds a BFA from the University of Manitoba and has completed Apparel Design coursework at Red River College Polytechnic. She currently works as the Photography Technician at the School of Art, University of Manitoba, and is also a freelance cinematographer and contract artist with the Winnipeg Film Group.
