For over fifteen years, Laura Letinsky has explored the possibilities of still-life photography. Her work is characterized by subdued colors, creating an air of lightness and tranquility that contrasts with the decaying produce and mass-produced objects she incorporates. Through playful manipulations of balance, space, and scale, Letinsky examines human perception and strives for meaningful form.

While her earlier photographs evoke a sense of melancholy—often reflecting absence or the fleeting passage of time—her recent works focus on intricate paper constructions. These compositions challenge spatial and perceptual understanding, using the timeless still-life genre to question how we see and interpret the world around us.

Born in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Laura Letinsky graduated with a BFA (Hon) from the School of Art in 1986 and earned an MFA from Yale University School of Art in 1991. She is currently a Professor in the Department of Visual Arts at the University of Chicago.

Letinsky’s work has been exhibited at institutions such as the Canadian Museum of Contemporary Photography, Musée des Beaux-Arts in Montreal, Museum of Modern Art in New York, and The Renaissance Society in Chicago. Her work is included in prestigious collections such as:

  • Art Institute of Chicago
  • J.P. Getty Museum, Los Angeles
  • Hermès Collection, Paris
  • Museum of Fine Art, Houston
  • San Francisco Museum of Modern Art

She is represented by Yancey Richardson Gallery, New York, and is the recipient of numerous awards, including the Canada Council International Residency at Kunstlerhaus Bethanien, Berlin, and a John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Fellowship.
