Woven Roots (sutoy bona shikor) explores the emotional landscape of immigration, cultural identity, and displacement. Drawing from Bengali scroll painting and a personal symbolic language, Laila Fazal’s work reflects on how colonial histories have reshaped tradition and womanhood in post-colonial Bangladesh. As an immigrant, she weaves past and present to examine how culture transforms across borders. Each piece becomes a visual narrative, honoring memory, questioning inherited identity, and reclaiming space for stories often overlooked.
Laila Fazal’s work is a compelling exploration of personal experience intricately woven with political and social frameworks. Her artistic voice emerges from the tensions and tenderness of lived realities—both individual and collective—drawing on themes of identity, displacement, and the unspoken narratives of everyday life.
Laila Fazal, born in Bangladesh in 1995, holds both a BFA and MFA from the University of Dhaka. She is currently an MFA candidate at the School of Art and lives in Winnipeg, Manitoba. Laila has participated in numerous artist residencies both in Bangladesh and internationally. Her work has been exhibited in group shows across Canada, India, Nepal, and Bangladesh, reflecting her growing presence in the contemporary South Asian and diasporic art scene.
