One hundred years ago, from May 15 to June 25, the city of Winnipeg was consumed by tensions stemming from a strike that saw 30,000 workers walk off their jobs, effectively paralyzing the city. This historic event aimed to secure equitable treatment for laborers through collective action. While it did not achieve its goals immediately, the strike laid the foundation for significant political and labor advancements in Canada.
In recognition of this centennial, the School of Art Gallery presents a selection of 25 works from its permanent collection on the theme of labor. These pieces explore various facets of labor, including activism, the work of individual laborers, labors of love, and the struggle for survival. Each work reflects connections to labor, workers, and working conditions in both urban and rural contexts.
