This exhibition showcases the winners of the 2017 Association of University Presses Book, Jacket, and Journal Show, celebrating excellence in design for short-run books published by universities and colleges.
Among the winners is the University of Manitoba’s entry, Thrashing Seasons: Sporting Culture in Manitoba and the Genesis of Prairie Wrestling, which was recognized in the Scholarly Typography category. Competing against 58 entries, Thrashing Seasons was one of only nine selected for the traveling exhibition.
The jurors praised the book’s design, stating:
- “The unusual combination of typography interacts well with the content and imagery throughout this book.”
- “This book manages a light touch of design irony and beautiful typesetting.”
Other winners in the Scholarly Typography category include prestigious institutions such as Columbia University Press, University of Georgia Press, Johns Hopkins University Press, Princeton University Press, and the University of North Carolina Press.
The Association of University Presses contest received 563 entries across various categories in 2017, with 100 winners chosen by four jurors for the traveling exhibition.
