Research

Research interests

Dr. Gao’s research focuses on optimizing soil fertility and nutrient management practices in sustainable agricultural systems to achieve agronomic and environmental benefits. By understanding the factors that control nutrient availability, sustainable management practices for better environment and human health, can be developed. Specific research interests include:

  • Root-soil interaction and nutrient availability in rhizosphere
  • 4R nutrient stewardship to improve crop utilization of nitrogen and reduce nitrous oxide emissions
  • Management practices to enhance zinc bioavailability in crop grains for better nutritional quality
  • Impact of animal grazing on carbon and nitrogen cycling in grasslands
