Research

Research interests

Dr. Thiessen Martens' research focuses on nutrient flows in agroecosystems, including agronomic and environmental aspects. She is especially interested in phosphorus dynamics in soils and plants, as well as nutrient dynamics in all kinds of ecological farming systems. Her specific research interests include:

  • Closing local and regional nutrient cycles by using recycled fertilizers, such as struvite recovered from wastewater
  • Improving soil fertility management in organic and low-input cropping systems
  • Understanding and optimizing diversified cropping practices such as intercropping, cover cropping, growing perennial forages and grains, and integrating crops and livestock
