Research

Research interests

Dr. Amarakoon's research focuses on the fate of excess nutrients, veterinary antibiotics, steroidal hormones, and pesticides in the agroecosystem and remediation and reclamation of contaminated soils for agricultural sustainability, the health of the environment, and the health and well-being of the public. Research interests are focused on:

  • Transport of phosphorus, veterinary antibiotics, and steroidal hormones in manure-amended cropland
  • Impacts of oil and gas pipelines on crop productivity and soil health
  • Solubility of wastewater recovered phosphorus (struvite)
  • Reduction of pesticides point source pollution
  • Assessment of trace element contamination in urban gardens
