Dr. Flaten retired in January 2021 and no longer teaches classes.
Dr. Flaten maintains an interest in the effects of agricultural management practices on N, P, K, S and micronutrients from soil reserves, various forms and types of fertilizers, livestock manures, industrial byproducts and municipal waste and their impact on crop yield, crop quality, agricultural sustainability, and environmental quality.
Dr. Flaten retired in January 2021 and does not lead any more research projects.
During his career at the University of Manitoba, Dr. Flaten served as Director of the School of Agriculture, Associate Dean of the Faculty of Agricultural and Food Sciences, Professor, Acting Head of the Department of Soil Science, and Chair of the National Centre for Livestock and the Environment.
Dr. Flaten was the recipient of several awards related to teaching excellence, outreach, and research, including the Dr. and Mrs. Ralph Campbell Outreach Award, the University’s highest outreach honor. He also received Fellow Awards from the Canadian Society of Soil Science, American Society of Agronomy, and the Soil Science Society of America and was elected as Professor Emeritus upon his retirement in 2021.
