  • Dr. Mark G. Torchia (he/him)

    Dr. Mark Torchia, Dipl.B.T., MS, PhD, is the Vice-Provost (Teaching and Learning). Previous to that, Mark was the Executive Director for The Centre for the Advancement of Teaching and Learning and had a 30-year career as a clinical scientist in the Department of Surgery with St. Boniface General Hospital, the Winnipeg Regional Health Authority, and the Health Sciences Centre.

    He was also the Director of the Medical Pre-clerkship Program for the Max Rady College of Medicine and continues as an associate professor of Surgery.

    Dr. Torchia has founded three successful medical device companies, including Monteris Medical. He is the author of numerous academic papers, three medical textbooks, and holds many patents. Mark is a winner of the prestigious Earnest C. Manning Principal Prize and also the inaugural Governor General of Canada’s Award for Innovation.

Responsibilities

  • The Centre for the Advancement of Teaching and Learning: The Vice-Provost (Teaching and Learning) provides oversight and support for the continued programming of the Centre.
  • Experiential Learning:  The Office of Experiential Learning serves as a gathering place for collaboration and innovation in experiential education.
  • Entrepreneurial and Innovative Thinking:  This project brings together several UM units, as well as the broader entrepreneurship community in Manitoba, to support UM students' learning about, through, and for entrepreneurship and innovative thinking.
  • Digital Strategy: A digital strategy will ensure appropriate use of technology that supports the mission of UM and delivers excellence in the experiences that matter to staff, students, and the UM community.
  • Academic Data Warehouse:  This project will improve data management and access for UM faculties and units, and allow for easier analysis of data to inform program activities.
