  • Dr. Mark G. Torchia (he/him)

    Dr. Mark Torchia, Dipl.B.T., MS, PhD, is the Vice-Provost (Learning, Analtyics, and Academic Infrastructure). Previous to that, Mark was the Executive Director for The Centre for the Advancement of Teaching and Learning and had a 30-year career as a clinical scientist in the Department of Surgery with St. Boniface General Hospital, the Winnipeg Regional Health Authority, and the Health Sciences Centre.

    He was also the Director of the Medical Pre-clerkship Program for the Max Rady College of Medicine and continues as an associate professor of Surgery.

    Dr. Torchia has founded three successful medical device companies, including Monteris Medical. He is the author of numerous academic papers, three medical textbooks, and holds many patents. Mark is a winner of the prestigious Earnest C. Manning Principal Prize and also the inaugural Governor General of Canada’s Award for Innovation.

Responsibilities

  • Academic Data Warehouse: Oversees the development of the Academic Data Warehouse to improve data management, increase access to information, and support data-informed decision-making across faculties and units.
  • Digital Strategy: Leads the development and implementation of a digital strategy that supports UM's mission and enhances the experiences of staff, students and the broader UM community.
  • Artificial Intelligence: Chairs the UM Committee on Artificial Intelligence.
  • Strategic Enrolment Management: Oversees implementation of the Strategic Enrolment Management Plan 2026–2031, which provides a holistic, data-driven framework for coordinated recruitment, retention and graduation strategies across the student lifecycle.
  • Capital Planning: Oversees the development and rehabilitation of formal and informal learning spaces across UM.
  • Risk Management: Leads or co-leads the management of the following risk areas within the UM Risk Registry: Strategic Enrolment, Recruitment, and Graduation; Cybersecurity; Technology Investment; and Artificial Intelligence.
