About the Maker Space
The Maker Space is a student-driven fabrication shop with capabilities ranging from 3D printing up to CNC machining and is open to all Faculty of Science undergraduate and graduate students who wish to learn the design and fabrication skills necessary to make scientific equipment.
Student training is offered at no charge. Any student or faculty member who is interested in training may request an initial training appointment using the Request Training form linked below.
The Maker Space also serves the fabrication needs of researchers. We have a large range of graduate and undergraduate students printing items for their research groups. Students who operate the Maker Space will also print items for research groups on a case-by-case basis as time permits.
Location and hours
We are located in Room 112, Allen Building.
Fall 2024 opening hours:
- Monday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
- Tuesday, 10 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.
- Wednesday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
- Thursday, 9 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.
- Friday, 10:30 to 11 a.m. and 12:30 to 5 p.m.
Print rates
What are the fees used for?
The Faculty of Science Maker Space is operated based primarily on fees charged for the usage of the 3D printers and other equipment hosted in the Maker Space. Fees fund student positions operating the Maker Space and cover costs for materials, maintenance and parts.
How are the fees determined?
Fees are determined by the amount of material used, the type of material, the machine time required for the job and fees for student time if applicable. There are three categories of jobs charged: personal, academic and other.
- Personal jobs are permitted but are given the lowest priority and are charged higher fees to subsidize academic activities.
- Academic fees are set on a cost-recovery basis and are not charged based on the machine time used.
- Other jobs include batch jobs for outreach items, conference memorabilia or external requests. Fees are set for other jobs on a case-by-case basis.
3D Printing Fees
3D print jobs are the most common request. A table of charge-out rates for common 1.75 mm diameter filaments for small-sized prints is included below. These rates are subject to change without notice.
Filament Type | Academic Rate (Per meter) | Personal Rate (Per Meter) |
PLA | $0.40 | $0.60 |
Carbon Fibre Infused PLA | $1.00 | $1.50 |
Polycarbonate | $0.60 | $0.90 |
Specialty | Variable | Variable |
Student fees
Students who operate the maker space may assist or complete jobs for others. Their time is charged out at $25 per hour. Services that are available include 3D printing as well as 3D design.
Request training
Please fill out the form below. You will be contacted by a representative of the Maker Space to arrange a training session.
Fabrication consultation
Do you want to make something but do not have time to be trained? You may submit an inquiry about your fabrication project to ask about its feasibility, expected time frame to completion and anticipated cost.
Please include what kind of material you would like to use and pertinent details about the project (e.g. the environment the item will be used in, expected strain, etc.) that may influence how it needs to be made.
Note that if you operate a research group or some other organization involving students it is more cost-effective and valuable to have students trained at the Maker Space to produce items for your research group. All students and groups are welcome to submit a training request.
