Teaching philosophy

Each individual in a classroom brings knowledge and experience that can be shared and built upon. As an instructor in the College of Nursing, I see myself as a facilitator of learning who creates opportunities to develop initial and deeper understanding of the concepts being introduced and extended in the courses I teach.

I value active and engaged participation, and work to create a classroom in which students can develop competencies necessary in their professional careers.

Biography

My nursing career has spanned long-term care, acute care and community settings in Alberta, Manitoba and Ontario where I transitioned from clinical to administrative/leadership-oriented roles. My acute care clinical experience included general medicine, orthopedics, neurosurgery, medical/ surgical intensive care and emergency.

The majority of my career was with First Nations and Inuit Health Branch where i worked as a community health nurse and educator (clinical and administrative) in Manitoba and Ontario nursing stations and as the Director of Nursing in Manitoba. My career focus continued to be leadership and administration oriented as the regional emergency program director for Winnipeg Regional Health Authority. 

My PhD research focus will be health workforce planning oriented, exploring nurses’ work preferences. Additional research interests include health system leadership, health economics, and rural and remote practice. While working on my PhD, I have taken on temporary management, leadership and/or consultative roles with Prairie Mountain Health, the Grace Hospital, Indigenous Services Canada and Southern Health to remain connected with the health care system.
