Research summary
Dr. Chernomas’ research involves two streams – mental health and nursing education. One focus in mental health included women living with serious mental illness in the community. Using qualitative research designs, she investigates individuals’ perspectives about the impact of illness on their lives. Principles of recovery and trauma-informed care further inform her research. Her diverse nursing education research projects include investigating the development of reflective practitioners; role transition of new graduates; and stress, depression and anxiety among nursing students. Current interests include the intersection of mental health, support, and learning.
Biography
Dr. Chernomas is an associate professor in the College of Nursing. Her research, including collaborative research, and related projects have been funded locally, regionally, and nationally. She has been involved with organizations such as the former Manitoba Schizophrenia Society and for a number of years was a member of the Manitoba Trauma Collaborative (formerly Partnership) aimed at advancing knowledge about trauma and promoting trauma-informed care practices. She has mentored graduate students on mental health related research projects and education focused research projects.
