When teaching, my goal is to foster and develop the critical thinking and problem-solving skills that will serve nurses throughout their careers. I take a student-centered approach to teaching, where students can feel safe to share, grow and learn in an accepting and dynamic environment.
I believe the best learning takes place in a setting where students are offered real world examples and then given the opportunity to analyze and discuss a broad range of ideas that will have practical application for the profession of nursing. My aim in teaching is to encourage a life-long curiosity and a desire to continue learning.
My nursing career began with 17 years of clinical experience at the Health Sciences Centre (HSC) in Winnipeg. Starting in 1989 I worked on the Neuro-Rehabilitation, Adult Medicine, and Psychiatry units as well as in the general float pool. In 2006 I became the nursing manager of the Rehabilitation Unit and in 2009 the Emergency Department of HSC.
After completing my master's degree in nursing administration, my career shifted to nursing leadership. I became the program director for a number of programs including, Geriatric Mental Health, Family Medicine, Psychiatry, Primary Care and Oncology at Seven Oaks General Hospital and director for the Emergency, ICU and Primary Care programs at Grace Hospital. As my career advanced, I undertook increasing levels of responsibility, becoming the chief nursing officer for Deer Lodge Centre and finally the regional vice-president of Clinical Services, Inter-Professional Practice and chief nursing officer for the Northern Health Region.
Teaching, the third phase of my nursing career, has afforded me the opportunity to share with students my passion for nursing and for my patients. I draw on my clinical and leadership experience while in the classroom to address pressing issues in health care today, including the impact of the social determinants of health and accessibility to health care in Manitoba, (particularly in Northern and remote areas).
I love to discuss my experience as a nurse leader and provide an understanding of both the health system and the significant role nurses play within it. Currently I am an instructor ll in the College of Nursing undergraduate program, where I have been teaching Human Diversity, Law and Ethics and Development of Professional Identity, as well as a course leader for nursing practice. Prior to this I was a sessional instructor at University College of the North, Thompson Campus.
