Teaching philosophy

As a nursing educator, my teaching philosophy centers on fostering an inclusive, supportive, and engaging learning environment. Recognizing that English is my third language, I am particularly attuned to the challenges faced by students for whom English is an additional language (EAL). My personal experience drives my commitment to providing tailored support and resources to ensure all students, regardless of their linguistic background, can succeed.

My teaching style is a blend of facilitation and mentorship, aimed at inspiring students to become compassionate and competent healthcare professionals. I strive to create an interactive classroom where students feel encouraged to participate, ask questions, and share their perspectives. By integrating a variety of teaching methods—such as lectures, group discussions, hands-on simulations, and case studies—I cater to diverse learning preferences and promote critical thinking.

Inspiring learners is at the core of my approach. I do this by connecting theoretical knowledge to real-world applications, thus making the content relevant and engaging. I share my own experiences from the field, illustrating the impact of nursing on patient outcomes and the community. This not only enriches the learning experience but also motivates students to aspire to excellence in their practice.

Mentoring is another key aspect of my role. I build strong relationships with my students, offering guidance and support throughout their academic journey. I provide constructive feedback, helping them identify their strengths and areas for improvement. Additionally, I encourage students to set personal and professional goals, and I work with them to develop strategies to achieve these goals.

Guiding learners involves fostering a sense of autonomy and responsibility. I encourage students to take ownership of their learning by promoting self-reflection and critical analysis. I also emphasize the importance of lifelong learning, equipping them with the skills to continually update their knowledge and adapt to the evolving healthcare landscape.

Supporting EAL students is a priority in my teaching. I ensure that language barriers do not impede their learning by providing additional resources, such as glossaries of key terms, and offering extra help sessions. I also create an inclusive classroom environment where all students feel valued and respected.

In summary, my teaching philosophy is rooted in inclusivity, inspiration, mentorship, and guidance. By fostering a supportive and dynamic learning environment, I aim to empower my students to become compassionate, skilled, and reflective nursing professionals.

Biography

I grew up in China and later immigrated to Canada. Before entering the healthcare field, I worked as a procurement specialist for IBM. After immigrating to Canada, I transitioned into nursing, starting my career at Health Sciences Centre (HSC) in orthopedic nursing. I then gained experience in various areas, including adult hemodialysis, pediatric ICU, and CancerCare Manitoba.

In 2018, I began working as a clinical instructor at Red River College (RRC), where I taught various clinical courses such as subacute medicine, palliative care, community health, and senior practicum. My time at RRC provided me with extensive experience in the care of older adults and diverse patient populations.

In 2020, I obtained my Master's degree in nursing. My Master's thesis project focused on researching the intention of using nursing homes among Chinese Canadian family caregivers. I am passionate about taking care of patients in various settings and have a particular interest in aging issues and immigration health.

In 2021, I joined the teaching team at the University of Manitoba. I mainly teach the older adult and subacute medicine courses.
