Teaching philosophy
I strive to orient students’ attention toward the why of learning to avoid the pitfalls of losing sight of the bigger picture. Concepts and content are positioned within questions of purpose and meaningful participation in our own lives, and the lives of our patients, families, and communities.
I strive to make genuine connections with students to foster a sense of belonging in the classroom and clinical setting. This involves valuing that students bring a variety of life experiences that they will use as a foundation to build their nursing knowledge and identities on, and that each student brings a unique perspective and set of gifts that are needed to responsibly co-create the world in which we wish to live.
Biography
Andrew Kerr is an instructor II, College of Nursing, Rady Faculty of Health Sciences at the University of Manitoba. He has 17 years of nursing experience, comprised of five years as nurse clinician in palliative care and 12 years as a nursing instructor at Vanier College in Montreal, Quebec.
In addition to having taught theory, skills, simulation, and clinical practice in a variety of settings, Andrew has had leadership experience contributing to faculty development and mentorship, curriculum evaluation and revision, and Indigenizing curriculum.
