Fellowship details

The fellow gains exposure to:

  • Competency based training with regular reviews.
  • Experienced fellowship-trained faculty. Many faculty have anesthesia fellowships in regional anesthesia and/or pain, from academic centers across Canada and international experience.
  • A wide range of regional anesthesia ultrasound guided techniques across multiple surgical specialties, including both single-shot and neural catheter techniques. Exposure includes upper limb, lower limb, chest wall and truncal blocks.
  • Block exposure for prior fellows has been more than 400 procedures.
  • Busy acute pain service as part of the multidisciplinary team.
  • Block room system and off-site (i.e. outside the operating room suite) regional anesthesia service.
  • Academic projects: quality improvement projects and research opportunities. 
  • Opportunity to coordinate exposure at other academic centers, e.g. observerships or electives.
  • Education and teaching, including: grand rounds, journal clubs, ultrasound workshops, cadaver workshops and involvement in resident training.

Admission and application requirements

Application deadline: July 30

To apply for the fellowship program, you must:
  • Have successfully completed an anesthesia residency program.
  • Have passed, or meet the requirements to be eligible to sit for, the exams of the Royal College of Physicians of Canada.
  • Obtain a license to practice independent anesthesia in Manitoba. For information regarding licensing, please visit The College of Physicians and Surgeons of Manitoba website.
For international medical graduates who have completed specialist training outside Canada:
  • Applicants from non-accredited medical schools outside Canada or the United States must provide evidence of their recognition as specialists in their current jurisdiction. If the letter is not in English, a notarized English translation must be emailed to the department.
Interviews and selection:
  • Interviews will be offered to select applicants based on the evaluation of application materials. The University of Manitoba Fellowship Selection Committee will admit one or more candidates to the fellowship program following the interview.

How to apply

Your application to the fellowship program must include:

  • Letter of intent
  • Current curriculum vitae
  • Certificate of completion for specialty training
  • Names and contact information of three references
  • Anesthesia fellowship application questionnaire
  • Proof of English language proficiency (IMGs only):
    • IELTS (academic module) with an overall band score of 7 and a minimum score of 7 in each component, or
    • Occupational English Test-Medicine (OET-Medicine) with a minimum grade of B in each of the four subsets in the same sitting, or
    • Canadian English Language Proficiency Index Program-General (CELPIP-General) Test with a minimum score of 9 in each of the four skills in the same sitting.
