Dr. Wael El-Matary was appointed as the section head of pediatric gastroenterology at the Max Rady College of Medicine in 2011.
Before this, he completed his graduate training in pediatric gastroenterology in the United Kingdom from 1998 to 2005, including two years of clinical research (MD) at the University of Bristol (2000-2001), followed by a clinical fellowship at The Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto (2005-2006).
During his tenure at the University of Alberta as an assistant professor of pediatrics (2007-2010), he completed training in clinical epidemiology (MSc) and worked as a consultant pediatric gastroenterologist at the Royal Liverpool Children’s Hospital (Alder Hey, 2010-2011), Liverpool, United Kingdom, before joining the faculty at the University of Manitoba in 2011.
Dr.El-Matary is the founder of the Manitoba Ambi-directional Longitudinal Pediatric Inflammatory Bowel Disease Cohort Study (MALPID Study) which aims to assess epidemiology, clinical characteristics, and outcomes of children with IBD.
He has over 150 peer-reviewed publications and research affiliations with multiple groups including the Inflammatory Bowel Disease Research and Clinical Center, University of Manitoba, Western Canadian Inflammatory Bowel Disease Group, The GEM Project (Gene, Environment and Microbiome) Investigator group, Canadian Pediatric Inflammatory Bowel Disease Network, The Canadian Gastrointestinal Epidemiology Consortium, The International Consortium of Pediatric Primary Sclerosing Cholangitis Outcomes Study, Canadian Institutes of Health Research SPOR Team, and Canadian Association of Gastroenterology Intestinal Ultrasound Group.
His research interests include clinical, epidemiological, and translational aspects of IBD in children, and quality improvement in pediatric IBD.
