Research summary
Dr. Dakshinamurti's research focuses on the biology of breathing, specifically on pulmonary hemodynamics in hypoxic conditions and the psychiatry and pharmacology of vascular smooth muscle, specifically oxidative stress, prostanoid receptors and the enzyme adenylyl cyclase in hypoxic pulmonary arteries. Her team uses animal models, isolated blood vessels and cultured cells to study the circulatory transition of a baby coming off of mom's life support system and getting oxygen from inhaled air. The goal of her research is to better understand how lung blood vessels dilate rapidly in response to oxygen, and how this complex transition can go wrong in babies who don't get enough oxygen during birth, triggering the disease persistent pulmonary hypertension of the newborn (PPHN).

Biography
Dr. Shyamala Dakshinamurti is a neonatologist and biomedical researcher heading the Neonatal Pulmonary Biology Lab and anchoring the small animal hemodynamics lab in the Children’s Hospital Research Institute of Manitoba (CHRIM).
She is also research director and scholarly oversight committee chair for the University of Manitoba’s Neonatology Fellowship Program.
She served three consecutive terms on the Board of Directors of CHRIM, serves on the executive of CHRIM’s Biology of Breathing research theme, is on the board of the Winnipeg Rh Institute Foundation and the Manitoba Medical Services Foundation.
