Emerging infectious diseases pose risks not only to animals but also to human health, making cross-species disease transmission a critical public health concern. Dr. Md Niaz Rahim’s research focuses on molecular biology, virus-host interactions, and veterinary diagnostics, using a One Health approach that integrates human, animal, and environmental health to address infectious disease threats.
Rahim specializes in zoonotic diseases, studying how infections spread between species and their implications for food safety and public health. His research provides valuable insights into disease trends in animals, informing strategies for prevention, control, and risk assessment.
With expertise in veterinary diagnostics, Rahim contributes to improving disease detection and management in animals, enhancing animal welfare and food safety. His work also deepens understanding of immune responses in animals and how these responses can influence disease transmission between species.
Dr. Rahim is an adjunct professor in the Department of Medical Microbiology and Infectious Diseases at the University of Manitoba. He is also the chief scientific officer for Veterinary Diagnostic Services (VDS) within the Manitoba government.
His research focuses on infectious diseases in animals, zoonotic disease trends, and their implications for food safety and public health. His work aligns with the One Health approach, which integrates human, animal and environmental health to address emerging infectious threats.
He earned a PhD from the University of Manitoba and completed postdoctoral training in special pathogens at the National Microbiology Laboratory with the Public Health Agency of Canada.
Rahim mentors graduate students and is currently accepting master’s students. His work contributes to advancements in animal health, disease prevention and veterinary diagnostics.
