Research summary

Over the past 15 years, Dr. Bolton has established a strong record of accomplishment of scientific research. He has published articles in high impact journals including the British Medical Journal and JAMA Psychiatry. He was a CIHR New Investigator (2011-2016) and was the recipient of a NARSAD Young Investigator Award. He has a strong commitment to research training, having directly supervised more than 70 students at the resident, undergraduate, PhD and physician assistant level. Dr. Bolton’s research interests include suicide, bereavement, pharmacoepidemiology, and psychiatric epidemiology. He has worked extensively with government and national level organizations in suicide prevention.

Biography

Dr. Bolton is the director of research for the department of psychiatry at the University of Manitoba. His primary affiliation is professor of psychiatry at the University of Manitoba where he holds the Ruth Hurd Professorship.

He has led a research program in mental health epidemiology since 2006.

Dr. Bolton completed his MD degree at the University of Ontario in 2001 and finished his residency in psychiatry at the University of Manitoba, earning his Fellowship of the Royal College of Physicians of Canada in 2006.

Dr. Bolton is a member of the Canadian Psychiatric Association’s Research Committee, and co-chaired the CPA’s Junior Researcher Colloquium from 2016-2021.

His primary research interest is the epidemiology of suicide. Other areas of investigation include mental disorder epidemiology, bereavement and pharmacoepidemiology.

Dr. Bolton’s work in suicide prevention and population health has led to involvement in a number of community outreach activities.

Between 2008-2014, he served as a member on the Board of Directors for the Canadian Association of Suicide Prevention (CASP).

He has worked with the chief medical examiner as a member of the Manitoba Justice Adult Inquest Review Committee.

In 2017, Dr. Bolton joined the Public Health Agency of Canada and Mental Health Commission of Canada National Research Advisory Committee on Suicide and its Prevention, and in 2020 joined the National Collaborative for Suicide Prevention as an executive board member.
