Under the leadership of Dr. Demitre Serletis, the Manitoba Neurosurgery Laboratory (MNL) is pushing the boundaries of neuroengineering with their cutting-edge research on in vivo biosignals acquired from the human brain. By utilizing non-invasive techniques such as extra- and intra-cranial electroencephalogram (EEG) recordings and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scans, the MNL is able to gain a deeper understanding of the complex neural networks that underlie epilepsy.
The team's innovative use of neuroengineering techniques, including nonlinear dynamics, complexity, phase synchrony and fractal methods, allows them to identify novel mathematical markers that can be used to better understand the transition to the epileptic state.
The MNL also employs advanced post-processing methods to analyze MRI scans, in the hopes of identifying specific targets for surgical resection. This combination of computer-based methodologies has the potential to revolutionize our understanding of epileptogenesis, opening up new possibilities for therapeutic intervention. By delving deeper into the intricacies of the human brain, the MNL is on the forefront of uncovering new and exciting insights into the underlying causes of epilepsy.
