As a leader in the field of emergency medicine, Dr. Chau Pham has dedicated her career to advancing the use of point-of-care ultrasound and promoting physician sustainability and wellness.
With a focus on gender equity in emergency departments, Dr. Pham's research aims to improve patient outcomes and enhance the overall quality of care in emergency settings.
Her work on the ULTRA4 (Ultrasound Localization to Resuscitate in Arrest – Part 4) study, part of a multi-center effort to guide compression with sonography, has received widespread attention. As the primary site for the study, the University of Saskatchewan became the leader of this innovative approach to cardiac arrest resuscitation.
Dr. Pham's SHoC-ED (Sonography in Hypotension and Cardiac Arrest in the Emergency Department) trial is another important step in her research journey. The multi-center randomized control trial helped to answer the question of whether point-of-care ultrasonography improves clinical outcomes in emergency department patients with undifferentiated hypotension.
Dr. Pham is currently evaluating the impact of a newly implemented VECTRS Stroke Team Activation Protocol on improving time to CT scan and acute stroke interventions.
Her work continues to inspire and challenge the medical community to rethink traditional approaches to emergency care and embrace new, cutting-edge techniques.
Dr. Chau Pham is an associate professor in the department of emergency medicine at the Rady Faculty of Health Sciences, University of Manitoba.
Dr. Pham’s career is a testament to perseverance and resilience, having overcome significant challenges to reach her current position of prominence. Born in Vietnam and raised in Canada as a child refugee, Dr. Pham's path to success was not an easy one. However, her determination led her to complete her B.Sc. and MD at the University of Manitoba, and later, her FRCPC-EM in 2010.
She currently serves as medical director and emergency physician at an academic trauma hospital, the Health Sciences Centre, and has dedicated her career to advancing the field through her innovative research and exceptional clinical care.
In addition to her medical expertise, Dr. Pham holds a master’s degree in business administration from the University of Manitoba, which she obtained in 2013. She views this education as a complementary asset to her medical knowledge, and has leveraged it to become an expert in the fields of professional sustainability and wellness, point-of-care ultrasound, and EDI with a focus on gender equity in emergency medicine.
Her work has earned her numerous accolades, including the Martha Donovan Women’s Leadership Award from The Winnipeg Foundation, the Women in Emergency Medicine COVID-19 Heroes award from the Canadian Association of Emergency Physicians, and the Educator of the Year Award from the Department of Emergency Medicine at the University of Manitoba.
